Georgia Theatre Co.
lis Host to Teachers
ATLANTA—The Georgia Theatre Co., under
direction of William K. Jenkins, president,
participated in the Atlanta Chamber
of Commerce program to keep public school
teachers informed on the operations and
problems of business under the American
system of private enterprise. The theatre
company was host to a group of city and
county teachers at a luncheon at the de
luxe Capitol City club, a forum conducted
in the home office and a tour of the home
office departments and the mammoth Fox
Theatre.
Leading the forum discussion, which pointed
up the increasing threats to private enterprise
and the advantages offered by the
"American way" as compared to that of
.socialistic countries, were Frederick G.
Storey, Georgia Theatres' vice-president, and
Willis J. Davis, executive assistant to Jenkins.
all-day program featured visits by the
(teachers to all departments of the theatre
jcompany's home office operation. In the
ibooking department, T. R. "Tom" Jones, buyer
'and booking supervisor, briefly explained the
of setting up programs in ad-
[vance for a circuit of theatres. Controller
T. H. Eubanks gave the teachers an idea of
(the efficiency demanded in theatre accounting.
And advertising and public relations
'procedures and standards, were summarized
'by Holt Gewinner jr., the publicity director.
Concessions also came into the complete
coverage, with the teachers making an inspection
of the company's refrigerated candy
and popcorn warehouse.
T. H. Read, Atlanta operations manager
for the company, arranged a special afternoon
screening of "Breakthrough" for the
.teachers, through cooperation of the Warner
exchange here.
Reasoning that the coming generation
should be made more familiar with the prac-
[tical application of free enterprise as the
protection for our competitive system
[of American business, leading business firms
[cooperated with the Atlanta Chamber of
[commerce's move to give the youngsters'
teachers a first-hand resume of present day
business operations.
Other groups of teachers were conducted
on visits to banks, department stores, Atlanta's
municipal airport and other types of
"free enterprise" businesses.
$5,000 Fire at Greenwood
Drive-In at Shreveport
SHREVEPORT. LA.—Fire at the Greenwood
Road Drive-In just outside the city
limits November 2 caused a loss estimated by
Fire Chief Kendrick at between $4,000 and
$5,000. This drive-in which is owned by Joy
Houck. operator of a chain of film houses in
the south, was the first drive-in theatre
erected in Shreveport.
The operator continued to reel the film
during the fire and no excitement was
caused. Many remained in their cars but a
few got out and watched firemen extinguish
the blaze with an emergency water wagon.
The blaze was under control in about 25
minutes. Fire did not damage the film equipment
or screen, the blaze being confined to
the front of the building.
