MILWAUKEE
Dusiness was very good at most of the
theatres here during the three days when
approximately 14,000 teachers were in the city
to attend their annual three-day convention.
All the first run theatres had "Welcome,
Teachers" signs out and ran invitations in
newspaper ads. The most prominent ad was
that of Fox Wisconsin, advertising "The
Their Glamor in One Great Show" — 'Platinum
Blonde.' " The Downer offered "Macbeth"
for those who did not wish to go in
for glamor. It was reported that thousands
of teachers played hooky from the convention
to attend the theatres and shopping places.
"Vienna Night," not a film, attracted about
900 of Milwaukee's German-speaking population
on a recent Saturday night. There
were many laughs, as Austria's and Germany's
topmost stars were on the stage,
including Theo Lingen of German films;
Herbert Zernick, a Berlin comedian, and
several Viennese humorous singers. The show
is touring the country. Lingen said that in
Germany and Austria a typical picture wlllj
have a budget of about $60,000. Television,
he said, had not reached Austria or Germany
as yet.
Schools were closed during the three-day
teachers convention and neighborhood houses
catered to the kids with matinee ."ihows. The
most prominent appeal was made by eight
Fox Wisconsin theatres: the East, Garfield,
Jackson, Sherman, Shorewood, State. Uptown
and Venetian, where 25 color cartoons were
shown November 2, offering three hours of
entertainment, with all seats at 25 cents,
plus tax.
Hartford Theatres has been formed here
to operate theatres by E. J. Haggestad, A. J.
Engelhard and E. W. Peck, who also have
incorporated the Mineral Point Theatre Co.
Lefebre, sales engineer for the
Vic Manhardt Co., RCA distributors for
Wisconsin, resigned.
Milwaukee Service Union
Demands Wage Increase
MILWAUKEE—Members of the Building
Service Employes Local 50 picketed many
theatres here last weekend, specially downtown
first runs, but the projectionists and
other unions crossed the lines since th&re
was a question on whether the strike had
been sanctioned by the Milwaukee Trades
council. The service employes ask an increase
of 25 cents an hour from their current
rates ranging from 86 to $1.20.
Leonard Kielpinski, manager of the Kino,
German-language house, said owners instructed
him to grant the union demands
if necessary to keep the house open.
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS
CLEVELAND — Adult theatre attendance
may be dropping off but the kids are still
pouring in at Saturday matinees, Fred Holzworth,
manager of the Hilliard Square Theatre,
said recently. He attributed the success
'
of the kiddy shows to the cooperation of the
PTA, the Lakewood board of education and
Mrs. Ethel Brewer, president of the Motion
Picture Council of Greater Cleveland.
Mrs. Brewer keeps schools informed of the
Saturday programs and parents are not hesi- :
tant to send their children to the films because
they are approved by the schools and
the PTA. PTA members police the matinees
at the Hilliard Square and Holzworth
reported practically no vandalism in the last
'
five years.
