Michigan lA lo Raise
Special Court Fund
DETROIT—A statewide fund of at least
$25,000 was authorized by the Michigan
lATSE at a special meeting held here to
pay the expenses of pending or anticipated
court cases by various state locals, E. Clyde
Adler, president of Michigan lATSE, explained.
Disputes over alleged breaches of
contract between the union and exhibitors
are becoming increasingly frequent, especially
in connection with drive-in operations,
and at least one case has been vigorously
fought by the Ann Arbor local (BOX-
OFFICE, August 23, page 41). Others are
understood to be pending. Adler said some
exhibitors apparently are seeking to reduce
costs of projectionists.
The fund, which may exceed $25,000, is
to be raised by a special assessment on all
members in the state, expected to be from
10 to 25 cents a week a member.
Detroit Stagehands Local 38, of which
Adler is business agent, is currently negotiating
with the downtown Broadway-Capitol
Theatre, following what Adler terms a "lockout"
of two stagehands. It is his contention
that the maintenance work performed by
these men is still being performed, presumably
by others, and a peaceful settlement
with the Saul Korman circuit, operating the
house, is expected.
Local 38 is also currently negotiating with
all major theatre operators in Detroit, as
well as the Jam Handy studios and the three
television stations, for renewal of contracts
now expiring. The union is asking for a 10
per cent basic raise plus a cost of living
increase, figured at about 5.3 per cent.
Now Await Supreme Court
DETROIT—Formal legal procedure for
settlement of the record was completed Friday
(26) in the case of Martin and Marie
Popielarski, former operators of the now
defunct Forest Theatre, against Edward
Jacobson, preceding operator, and others. A
judgment for $8,000 was given several months
ago in circuit court, ba.sed on the Popielarski's
claim that the former operator had given "too
rosy a picture" of earnings. The defendants
have appealed to the Michigan supreme court,
which is now expected to schedule a hearing in
about six months.
