The most common molluscs present are included in Table 5-12 <strong>and</strong> compared to the<br />

community observed in the <strong>Weeki</strong> <strong>Wachee</strong>/Mud <strong>River</strong> complex. Montagna found a<br />

number of significant relationships between abundance <strong>and</strong> salinity which can be<br />

expressed as :<br />

y = а * exp(-0.5*(ln(s/c)/b) 2 )<br />

Where y = Number of organisms / m 2<br />

a = maximum abundance<br />

s = salinity (ppt)<br />

c = maximum salinity value<br />

b = rate of response change<br />

The model assumes that there is an optimal range for salinity <strong>and</strong> that values will<br />

decline in a non-linear fashion for salinities on either side of optimal (Montagna et al.<br />

2002). An example response is provided in Figure 5-5 for Polymesoda caroliniana.<br />

Table 5-13 provides the coefficients for significant (r 2 > 0.3) response of dominant native<br />

taxa in the <strong>Weeki</strong> <strong>Wachee</strong> <strong>and</strong> Mud <strong>River</strong>s.<br />
