undulating topography. Karst features are a result of repeated chemical dissolution <strong>and</strong><br />

deposition of the underlying carbonate rock (upper Floridan aquifer) in response to<br />

fluctuations in sea level over geologic time. Density of karst features range from 10-25<br />

/mi2 in the s<strong>and</strong> hill ridges of the Gulf Coastal Lowl<strong>and</strong>s to 0-5 in the Brooksville Ridge.<br />

Enlarged pores (vugs) in the carbonate rock tend to concentrate groundwater flow<br />

leading to additional dissolution <strong>and</strong>/or fractures. The result is a coastline that is<br />

dominated not by surface runoff, but by discharge of groundwater. Within the Springs<br />

Coast there are five 1 st order (>100 cfs), eight 2 nd order (10-100 cfs) <strong>and</strong> four 3 rd order<br />
