How to apply<br />
Application Procedures for <strong>2001</strong> Entry<br />
Higher Education<br />
The minimum requirements for entry into <strong>Swinburne</strong> degree courses<br />
is the satisfactory completion of the Victorian Certificate of Education<br />
(VCE) with passes in English Units 3 <strong>and</strong> 4 OR Equivalent Studies.<br />
Equivalent Studies to the VCE include:<br />
• qualifications obtained interstate or overseas at either a secondary<br />
or tertiary level<br />
or<br />
• successful completion of a <strong>TAFE</strong> Diploma or Certificate IV or any<br />
tertiary subjects.<br />
Some courses have Prerequisite Subjects in VCE <strong>and</strong>/or Special<br />
Requirements. These are set out in this publication, <strong>Swinburne</strong> course<br />
brochures <strong>and</strong> the VTAC <strong>Guide</strong>. Applicants must satisfy Prerequisites<br />
<strong>and</strong> Special Requirements to be eligible for entry into a particular<br />
course.<br />
Non Year 12 Applicants<br />
Applicants who do not have VCE (or equivalent studies) can apply<br />
under the <strong>Swinburne</strong> Special Entry Scheme through VTAC. There is no<br />
age requirement. Bachelor of Business <strong>and</strong> Bachelor of Business/Arts<br />
(Language) applicants must sit the STAT Multiple Choice test,<br />
managed by VTAC. Applicants for other courses must complete the<br />
VTAC form SE.<br />
In all cases, relevant employment experience <strong>and</strong> educational<br />
background will be taken into account. Students applying for all<br />
Science <strong>and</strong> Engineering courses must have passed the prerequisite<br />
subjects.<br />
<strong>TAFE</strong><br />
For entry into <strong>TAFE</strong> Certificate IV <strong>and</strong> Diploma courses, satisfactory<br />
completion of VCE (see above) or a <strong>TAFE</strong> certificate level qualification<br />
or relevant work experience is required. Some courses have a<br />
minimum age requirement.<br />
As with Higher Education courses, some <strong>TAFE</strong> courses also have<br />
Special Requirements or Prerequisite Subjects. Refer to individual<br />
course entries for details.<br />
Mature age applicants can apply if they are at least eighteen years of<br />
age <strong>and</strong> have been out of full-time schooling for at least twelve<br />
months. Mature age applicants are not required to have completed a<br />
Year 12 qualification.<br />
VTAC Applications<br />
For entry into full-time <strong>and</strong> some part-time degree courses <strong>and</strong> most<br />
<strong>TAFE</strong> Certificate IV <strong>and</strong> Diploma full-time courses, applications need<br />
to be made through the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC).<br />
Applicants are advised to obtain a copy of the VTAC <strong>Guide</strong>. The 2000<br />
VTAC <strong>Guide</strong> is available in newsagencies from July at a cost of $5.00.<br />
Alternatively, the VTAC <strong>Guide</strong> can be accessed on line from VTAC’s<br />
website: www.vtac.edu.au<br />

Timely applications should be lodged at VTAC by the end of<br />
September. After this time a late fee will apply.<br />
In addition to applying through VTAC some courses also require a<br />
direct application, interview, audition <strong>and</strong> or a folio assessment.<br />
These are outlined under the course entry in this publication <strong>and</strong> in<br />
the VTAC <strong>Guide</strong>.<br />
Change of Preference<br />
Change of Preference is a great opportunity for students to reassess<br />
the courses they initially listed with VTAC in light of their results.<br />
A Change of Preference advice Hotline is available to VCE students<br />
after the publication of results from Friday 8 December to noon<br />
Monday 18 December. For advice of course options call 1300 368 777.<br />
Direct Applications<br />
Entry into all <strong>TAFE</strong> part-time <strong>and</strong> some full-time courses is by direct<br />
application to <strong>Swinburne</strong>. There are also several Higher Education<br />
part-time <strong>and</strong> later year entry courses that require a direct<br />
application. Telephone <strong>Swinburne</strong> for an application form using the<br />
contact numbers located in each course listing of this publication.<br />
Special Entry Schemes<br />
Students who fall under the following categories are eligible to<br />
apply to <strong>Swinburne</strong> for special admission: rural <strong>and</strong> isolated areas,<br />
low socio-economic background, women in non traditional areas,<br />
Aboriginal <strong>and</strong> Torres Strait Isl<strong>and</strong>ers <strong>and</strong> people with disabilities.<br />

<strong>Swinburne</strong> welcomes international students wishing to study <strong>TAFE</strong>,<br />
Degree or Postgraduate courses. Applications can be discussed with<br />

responsible for the admission, orientation <strong>and</strong> support of all<br />
