Welcome to Swinburne As we enter the new millennium, post-secondary education has never played a more critical role in shaping the future of your lives and your careers Our students are fortunate. Swinburne University of Technology is one of the few universities in Australia to offer a full range of programs from apprenticeships to PhDs. We give our students the added flexibility in study options of following well-defined ‘Pathways’ between our TAFE and Higher Education sectors. Swinburne not only provides students with the skills and knowledge that will help them find employment in their chosen career, but also provides an exciting environment that makes learning fun. Our students have access to a number of sporting, computer, library and student welfare facilities at each campus and all campuses are in close proximity to many forms of public transport. Undergraduate students also have the advantage of working closely with industry through our Industry Based Learning (IBL) program. Our IBL program not only provides students with paid work experience before graduating, it often leads to full-time employment opportunities with the same employer after graduation. Most degree courses include IBL which provides free-flow information between the University and the future employers of our graduates. To locate a specific course, consult the Course Index on pages 3 to 8, and identify the course title and page reference you require. Entry usually requires satisfactory completion of the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) or equivalent or appropriate level of TAFE studies. Many degrees at Swinburne offer an optional Industry Based Learning (IBL) year and an additional specialised Honours year. A number of Double Degree and Dual Qualification courses are also available. Dual Qualifications Swinburne offers programs combining three year degree programs with two year TAFE diplomas. The program enables students to complete the two courses at the same time, providing graduates with two qualifications on completion. Dual Qualifications generally take four years of full-time study. Postgraduate Courses Studies undertaken after completion of a Bachelors Degree or extensive work experience in the relevant field, usually in a specialised area of study. Postgraduate courses include Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), Masters by coursework or research, Graduate Diploma or Graduate Certificate. A PhD is the highest academic qualification attainable. Telephone 1300 368 777 for the Postgraduate Course Guide. TAFE Courses Advanced Diploma Highest level TAFE qualification requiring three years of full-time study (or equivalent part-time). Entry is based on satisfactory completion of the Diploma or equivalent. Diploma Normally two years of full-time study (or equivalent part-time). Entry is based on successful completion of the VCE or relevant industry experience. Certificate IV Normally one year of full-time study (or equivalent part-time), which can lead to the Diploma. Entry is based on successful completion of the VCE or relevant industry experience. Certificates I – III Courses vary in length and can include basic employment and preparatory skills, broad based induction skills and/or workplace skills at a basic level. Apprenticeships and Traineeships Certificate courses which have formal employment agreements and involve on-the-job training. Note: There is a gradual phasing out of the old system of TAFE qualifications (Advanced Certificates and Associate Diplomas), to be replaced by the above national system of awards.
