demonstrate recreation experience. There is a<br />

significant requirement for on-the-job training,<br />

<strong>and</strong> students are expected to have access to<br />

various recreation organisations in order to<br />

successfully complete the course.<br />

<strong>Course</strong> overview<br />

This course aims to provide an accredited training<br />

program for people wishing to pursue a career in<br />

the recreation industry in either Sports<br />

Administration or Sports Coaching. The<br />

Administration stream is for people wishing to<br />

pursue a career or improve skills in the<br />

administration of recreation organisations. Major<br />

studies include: accounting, management,<br />

finance, marketing, legal management. The Sports<br />

Coaching stream is for people wishing to pursue a<br />

career or improve skills in sports coaching<br />

operations. Major studies include: sports<br />

performance, first aid, workplace trainer, sports<br />

science.<br />

Career opportunities<br />

As well as providing an accredited training<br />

program for a career in the recreation industry,<br />

successful completion of the Diploma can provide<br />

a Pathway to business, marketing, management<br />

<strong>and</strong> tourism studies in the higher education sector<br />

at <strong>Swinburne</strong>. Students may also undertake<br />

studies in human movement, sports management<br />

<strong>and</strong> health sciences at other institutions.<br />

Entry requirements<br />

Satisfactory completion of an appropriate Victorian<br />

Year 12 or its equivalent. All applicants should<br />

have completed two or more years of paid or<br />

voluntary social welfare related work. In addition<br />

students are required to demonstrate a level of<br />

personal maturity <strong>and</strong> aptitude for the course. All<br />

applicants are required to attend an information<br />

session <strong>and</strong> interview.<br />

The course aims to provide participants with the<br />

knowledge, skills <strong>and</strong> values to perform<br />

competently as professional <strong>and</strong> social welfare<br />

workers. This role seeks to promote, relieve or<br />

restore the social functioning of individuals,<br />

families, social groupings or larger communities.<br />

Major studies include: sociology, psychology,<br />

welfare practice, community development, social<br />

policy, counselling skills.<br />

unions. Successful completion of the Diploma may<br />
