more complex skills necessary for students to access the broad<br />

spectrum of post high school pathways. All schools are asked to<br />

identify one or more school-wide area(s) of improvement of<br />

student learning with targets for each instructional team and/or<br />

department. Examples may include developing professional<br />

learning communities, focusing upon intervention efforts for<br />

students who are not achieving proficiency in all areas of the<br />

curriculum, school-wide instructional practice centered on<br />

significant mind work, etc.<br />

In addition to school-wide targets, individual teachers are asked to<br />

select a target toward personal growth that supports school and/or<br />

departmental targets and leads to improved learning for his or her<br />

students. The California Standards for the Teaching Profession,<br />

which are based on current research and expert advice pertaining to<br />

best teaching practices, serve as the guidelines for classroom<br />

practice.<br />

RECOMMENDATION<br />

The purposes served by the annual identification of these<br />

improvement efforts include:<br />

Providing focus for limited resources<br />

Providing leadership impetus for improving areas of most<br />

significant need and opportunity<br />

Communicating high priority efforts<br />

Coordinating the improvement efforts of district, school,<br />

and individual staff members<br />

Providing focus for special funding searches<br />

Determining areas of emphasis for staff develo<strong>pm</strong>ent<br />

No special budgetary support is recommended. The targets serve<br />

to focus efforts of both district and school staff and help establish<br />

priorities for the use of <strong>regular</strong>ly budgeted general funds, <strong>School</strong><br />

Improvement funds, and other special and categorical funds.<br />

1) Approve the Continuous Improvement Efforts for 2010-11 as<br />

presented.<br />

2) Express appreciation to the members of the 2010-11<br />

Curriculum Council for their work.<br />
