Item No. 15 e. more complex skills necessary for students to access the broad spectrum of post high school pathways. All schools are asked to identify one or more school-wide area(s) of improvement of student learning with targets for each instructional team and/or department. Examples may include developing professional learning communities, focusing upon intervention efforts for students who are not achieving proficiency in all areas of the curriculum, school-wide instructional practice centered on significant mind work, etc. In addition to school-wide targets, individual teachers are asked to select a target toward personal growth that supports school and/or departmental targets and leads to improved learning for his or her students. The California Standards for the Teaching Profession, which are based on current research and expert advice pertaining to best teaching practices, serve as the guidelines for classroom practice. PURPOSES FISCAL IMPACT RECOMMENDATION The purposes served by the annual identification of these improvement efforts include: Providing focus for limited resources Providing leadership impetus for improving areas of most significant need and opportunity Communicating high priority efforts Coordinating the improvement efforts of district, school, and individual staff members Providing focus for special funding searches Determining areas of emphasis for staff development No special budgetary support is recommended. The targets serve to focus efforts of both district and school staff and help establish priorities for the use of regularly budgeted general funds, School Improvement funds, and other special and categorical funds. 1) Approve the Continuous Improvement Efforts for 2010-11 as presented. 2) Express appreciation to the members of the 2010-11 Curriculum Council for their work. CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT EFFORTS Ensuring Success for EACH Student 2010-2011 Vision Statement: The commitment to excellence is the hallmark of the Irvine Unified School District. As a school and community partnership, our promise is to provide the highest quality educational experience we can envision. Overview: The Continuous Improvement Efforts provide a guide for our schools to use in developing their site plans and the lens through which they should focus program improvement efforts. Schools are expected to include, in their annual plan, district-wide targets and school-wide targets from this document. The Continuous Improvement Efforts should be shared with staff members and site councils in the spring so that the philosophies and practices reflected in this document inform school improvement plans and individual teacher goals. District-wide Goals: Improve the learning for each individual student through the use of evidence. Focus instruction on attainment of the state standards in the context of higher level mind work. School-wide Goals: Each school should identify one or more school-wide area(s) of improvement of student learning with targets for each instructional team and/or department.
