DESCRIPTION
NUTRITION SERVICES REORGANIZATION
Updating the organizational structure of the Nutrition Services
Department will assure compliance with nutritional standards of
the National School Lunch Program and the School Breakfast
Program. The Institute of Medicine recently published
recommended guidelines that will serve as the basis for these
standards. These include an increased offering of fruits and
vegetables, whole grains, and the decrease of sodium content in
school lunch offerings.
FISCAL IMPACT Approximately $35,000
Given these upcoming requirements and the alarming increase in
childhood obesity and related diseases, staff is recommending
changes to the Nutritional Services organizational structure to
facilitate a 21 st School Nutrition Program that is aligned with our
Board Policy 5030 Student and Staff Wellness.
With the implementation of the Lunch Box Program and other
technologies several years ago, Nutrition Services has the
capability to monitor meal accountability, inventory control and
sales activity. This information has led staff to identify areas
where greater efficiencies can be obtained while also increasing
student participation thus increasing sales.
The current structure of the Nutrition Services Department does
not support the changing environment. By updating the
organizational structure of the department, Nutrition Services will
be able to operate and provide a quality program for our students.
