"(1) To keep a list of the young men and women who are intelligent, trained,<br />

and qualified to fill responsible places as clerks, accountants, salesmen, janitors,<br />

porters, etc.; in this way a league can do much in getting suitable occupations<br />

for as many as are competent, especially so in Northern States.<br />

"(2) In protecting the community against fraudulent schemes, as false stock<br />

companies, that are gotten up solely for the purpose of defrauding colored<br />

people.<br />

(3) In fostering an interest in civic affairs, such as<br />

sanitation, clean yards, cultivating pride in making attractive in appearance the<br />

home districts of our people, and in other ways showing an interest in<br />

everything that may make up a better community life."<br />

In the same pamphlet under the head of "Suggested Subjects for Discussion"<br />

comes the following list:<br />

1. How to unify the colored people in the business interests of the community.<br />

2. What the professional men, ministers, teachers, doctors, lawyers, etc., can do<br />

to assist the business men and women.<br />

3. What the business men can do to assist the professional men.<br />

4. Patronizing Negro business enterprises.<br />

5. What new business can be established in the community.<br />

6. How can the business enterprises already established be improved?<br />

7. How to secure additional country trade.<br />

8. If a bank does not exist, can one be established and supported?<br />

9. If a millinery establishment does not exist, can one be established and<br />

supported, etc.?<br />

10. If a shoestore or gents' furnishing store does not exist, can one be established<br />

and supported?<br />

11. If a drug-store does not exist, can one be established and supported?<br />
