the time from their husbands, they still
believe that acting against their husbands is
acting against God. Such beliefs, however
were found to be less prevalent in dalit and
janajati communities.
On a positive note, women have gained
confidence to move freely after the peace
process began. People of armed groups and
security forces now seem to be friends hence
there is no fear of being interrogated by
them. However, the ongoing conflict in
Terai districts ( Sarlahi and Mahottari) has
created anxiety and fear that they might have
to face a similar situation again.
Currently, there seem to be insufficient
supportive structures in the community to
deal with women's psychological distress.
The coping pathways of women seemed
similar between districts; most women
reported that they cope with situations by
consulting their families.
Suggestions from participants dominantly
focused on changing the socio-cultural
context in which they live. Women
suggested changes with regards to their
participation in political processes,
awareness of their rights, education and
their economic situation. Women realized
that they are not able to improve themselves
socially and economically due to lack of
education so the upcoming interventions
should address educational issues. They are
interested to take advanced levels of skills
based training so that they can earn money
themselves and become independent.
Similarly, they suggested that decisions made
regarding women rights should not be
limited to only documents but must be
implemented in reality, which means
concerned organizations should advocate to
the government on such issues.
