Study area The Karrinyup-Gwelup Local Area is a western locality within the City of Stirling, 12km north-west of the Perth City Centre and between only 1.5km and 4.5km from the coastline. It is bounded by the Mitchell Freeway to the east, Balcatta Road and North Beach Road to the north, Marmion Avenue and Elliot Road to the west, and Newborough Street and Karrinyup Road to the south. The Local Area consists of the suburbs of Karrinyup and Gwelup and covers approximately 930 hectares. The Local Area is fairly uniform in land use character, with mostly low-density residential development. The area does contain pockets of medium density housing and some unit development and aged care facilities. The character is also constructed through a variety of housing styles interspersed throughout the Local Area including development from the 1960s and 70s, remnants of market garden housing and modern housing estates. The Local Area contains large green spaces throughout, adding to the character and natural feel. The Karrinyup Regional Centre serves as the major activity centre within the Local Area, providing commercial and civic facilities including the Karrinyup Shopping Centre, Library and Karrinyup Recreation Centre. The Balcatta Industrial Area and Stirling Regional Centre provide additional opportunity for commercial and civic facilities and employment opportunities.
