Community Priorities
In order to implement the Karrinyup-Gwelup Local Area Plan, and
conscientiously work towards the realisation of the community
vision for the future of the area, the most important actions and
ideas from the community need to be identified and addressed. It
is also necessary to identify which actions can realistically be
achieved in a short-time frame and which actions will require a
longer term implementation program. Furthermore, it should be
recognised that some ideas and actions will not be able to be
achieved during the life-span of the project due to resource and
time constraints. For these reasons, issues or actions that are
important, most needed and significantly beneficial to the largest
number of individuals, sectors of the community, collective
community, the local economy and environment are identified
through community engagement and will form the basis of
implementation.
Community Survey
The community survey asked participants to consider how much
they would like to see the area change over the coming 20 years.
Over 30% of participants wanted to see moderate change to the
Local Area, with similar proportions preferring the Local Area to
stay exactly the same and preferring it to become totally different.
The surveys also identified other community priorities for future
development. Importantly in terms of priorities, respondents
identified the places in the Local Area most in need of
improvement.

1. Lake Gwelup (3-way tie)
1. Road design and street scaping (3-way tie)
1. Karrinyup Shopping Centre (3-way tie)
2. Local Parks
3. Gwelup Plaza
There were equal proportions of respondents who believe that the
area most in need of improvement within the Local Area is ‘Lake
Gwelup (and surrounds),’ ‘Karrinyup Shopping Centre (and
surrounds)’, and that improvements should be made to ‘road
design, traffic management and streetscaping’. The other
suggestions that rated highly were ‘Local Parks’ and ‘Gwelup
Plaza’, which tie in with the overall themes and suggestions
brought forward at the forums.
Community surveys also asked respondents to identify one thing
missing in the area that they would most like to see.

1. Cafés, restaurants (particularly after-hours)
2. Swimming pool
3. Shopping opportunities (particularly convenient/local
shopping)
4. Public Transport Services
5. Entertainment opportunities
