Economic Development Issues & Opportunities Dialogue with the community has identified many opportunities and ideas for the local economic development in the future of the Karrinyup-Gwelup Local Area. It also highlighted a range of issues covering provision of and opportunities for local businesses, local centres, and evening and entertainment opportunities. These issues present opportunities for the Local Area to develop through the support of a thriving local economy and employment sector, and are discussed below. Small and Local Businesses Engagement with the Karrinyup-Gwelup community has identified a desire for Karrinyup-Gwelup to develop as a place bursting with opportunity. This opportunity would include new local businesses and in conjunction with this, enhanced capacity for social capital and social engagement, supporting the overall priority of building a sense of community. Local businesses also provide the opportunity for community members to access goods and services locally, which supports the priority of increasing the sustainability of travel behaviour within the Local Area (people can walk and ride to access goods and services) and contributes to the overall priority of a more sustainable Local Area in general. clusters of small businesses situated in key, easily accessible locations. There is also opportunity to locate more small businesses in lots directly adjacent to Karrinyup Regional Centre by encouraging mixed use development using rezoning. This would allow streets to become active and pedestrian friendly, providing ideal locations for small businesses to flourish. The City of Stirling supports and collaborates with the Small Business Centre and Stirling Business Association to provide guidance and support for local businesses within the City, and these services could provide excellent value to the economic development of the Local Area. Home Businesses Support for home businesses was frequently mentioned as part of the community engagement for the Karrinyup-Gwelup Local Area. With an increase in home businesses, residents will be encouraged to support the local economy of the area while making connections and growing the community atmosphere in addition to reducing the need to travel out of the Local Area in order to reach the same services. It has been identified that the Karrinyup-Gwelup Local Area would be an area in the future that has flourishing local businesses with the support for these businesses to survive and thrive. Support for local business was the top priority for the economic development and employment focus area at community forums. However, this support is mainly for small business, and there is a desire to control the development of any more large commercial businesses within the area. There is opportunity to increase local business presence along Karrinyup Road. Rather than encouraging strip development, the Activity Corridor could be activated further by small nodes or Although community support for home businesses was strong, it was complemented by some requirements for controls over and monitoring of types of businesses operating in the Local Area. This is to ensure that all businesses are in line with the desired family focused atmosphere of the area, are small in scale, and have a low impact on the surrounding area and community. It was also noted at community forums that high speed Internet is a necessity to ensure that home businesses can thrive in a competitive market industry.
