et al. 2008), and <strong>the</strong> need <strong>for</strong> reaf<strong>for</strong>estation activities<br />
to alleviate harvest<strong>in</strong>g pressures on wild stands has<br />
been highlighted (Gillieson et al. 2008). Significant<br />
plant<strong>in</strong>g has occurred on some islands s<strong>in</strong>ce 2000<br />
(Thomson 2006), and <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> plant<strong>in</strong>g <strong>sandalwood</strong><br />
now crosses many socioeconomic classes and<br />
<strong>in</strong>cludes <strong>smallholder</strong> farmers, village chiefs and leaders,<br />
wage earners, professional workers, expatriate<br />
residents and <strong>for</strong>eign <strong>in</strong>vestors.<br />
