narrow-sense heritability, use of germplasm derived<br />
from <strong>the</strong>se trees could improve <strong>the</strong> niche market opportunities<br />
<strong>for</strong> this product. Subsequently, <strong>the</strong> selected<br />
resource has been secured as a grafted seed orchard<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Vanuatu Department of Forests nursery on <strong>the</strong><br />
island of Efate. To ensure <strong>the</strong> participation of all relevant<br />
<strong>smallholder</strong>s <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Vanuatu <strong>sandalwood</strong> <strong><strong>in</strong>dustry</strong>,<br />
this improved material needs to be available to <strong>smallholder</strong>s<br />
on all islands with a climate and soil suitable<br />
<strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> production of <strong>sandalwood</strong>. This will facilitate<br />
wider adoption of <strong>sandalwood</strong> agro<strong>for</strong>estry and build<br />
a more substantial and high-quality resource that will<br />
benefit <strong>the</strong> market<strong>in</strong>g of Vanuatu <strong>sandalwood</strong>. These<br />
developments can result <strong>in</strong> improved <strong>smallholder</strong> and<br />
national <strong>in</strong>come, and ultimately improve livelihoods.<br />
Planted <strong>sandalwood</strong> species<br />
The <strong>sandalwood</strong> <strong><strong>in</strong>dustry</strong> <strong>in</strong> Vanuatu is currently<br />
based on S. austrocaledonicum; however, grow<strong>in</strong>g<br />
o<strong>the</strong>r species of <strong>sandalwood</strong> has been considered.<br />
S<strong>in</strong>ce 2008, a small number of S. album trees have<br />
been planted on Efate, with some <strong><strong>in</strong>dustry</strong> leaders<br />
actively promot<strong>in</strong>g its plant<strong>in</strong>g throughout Vanuatu.<br />
