The Australian Centre <strong>for</strong> International Agricultural Research (<strong>ACIAR</strong>) was established <strong>in</strong><br />

June 1982 by an Act of <strong>the</strong> Australian Parliament. <strong>ACIAR</strong> operates as part of Australia’s<br />

<strong>in</strong>ternational development cooperation program, with a mission to achieve more productive<br />

and susta<strong>in</strong>able agricultural systems, <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> benefit of develop<strong>in</strong>g countries and Australia.<br />

It commissions collaborative research between Australian and develop<strong>in</strong>g-country<br />

researchers <strong>in</strong> areas where Australia has special research competence. It also adm<strong>in</strong>isters<br />

Australia’s contribution to <strong>the</strong> International Agricultural Research Centres.<br />

Where trade names are used, this constitutes nei<strong>the</strong>r endorsement of nor discrim<strong>in</strong>ation<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st any product by <strong>the</strong> Centre.<br />

<strong>ACIAR</strong> TECHNICAL REPORTS SERIES<br />

This series of publications conta<strong>in</strong>s technical <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation result<strong>in</strong>g<br />

from <strong>ACIAR</strong>-supported programs, projects and workshops (<strong>for</strong><br />

which proceed<strong>in</strong>gs are not published), reports on Centre-supported<br />

fact-f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g studies, or reports on o<strong>the</strong>r topics result<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>ACIAR</strong><br />

activities. Publications <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> series are distributed <strong>in</strong>ternationally to<br />

selected <strong>in</strong>dividuals and scientific <strong>in</strong>stitutions, and are also available<br />

from <strong>ACIAR</strong>’s website at .<br />
