Fairer wages
While the current Government has been cutting public services and staff numbers public
service chief executives have been enjoying record pay-outs. Since 1997 state sector chief
executive salaries have increased by an average of 90 per cent. That‟s over eight per cent a
year – or more than twice the rate of inflation.
When the rest of the public service is facing cut backs and wage freezes that‟s not fair.
Under Labour no public service chief executive will be paid more than the base
salary for the Prime Minister. Labour won‟t cut existing salaries, but we will introduce
a cap on new salaries at the top.
