London: Harper Collins, 2001. Professor Al Glock was the
American director of the W. F. Albright Institute of
Archaeological Research in Jerusalem from 1978 to 1980 and
then of the Palestinian Institute of Archaeology at Bir Zeit until
19 January 1992 when he was shot dead. Glock told his students
that archaeology would reveal only Palestinian history and
nothing Israelite. However, he caused much controversy by
blocking the promotion of a Palestinian archaeologist, and may
also have been targeted as a symbol of what was perceived in
militant circles as the US betrayal of Palestinian aspirations.
