clearly and indelibly labelled with a unique field reference number. Preferably,<br />

the number should be on the specimen either directly using indelible waterproof<br />

ink, or on a piece of sticking plaster. Use of metal, plastic or synthetic paper tags<br />

for field'labels will reduce the chances of loss of data. Beware of damaging the<br />

specimen itself or of obscuring important details. It may be preferable to number<br />

the wrapping. Any field numbering system should be well considered so that it<br />

can be understood by others, avoiding unnecessarily complex coding. Research<br />
