The reasons <strong>for</strong> a success<br />

Its 17 selected projects (1) give IFSTTAR a strong presence in<br />

the Future Investments Programme. The Institute is involved<br />

in 5 laboratories <strong>of</strong> excellence (Labex), 4 facilities <strong>of</strong> excellence<br />

(Equipex), two <strong>technology</strong> research <strong>institute</strong>s, 4 <strong>institute</strong>s <strong>of</strong><br />

excellence on zero carbon energy (IEED), 2 <strong>technology</strong> transfer<br />

acceleration companies (SATT) <strong>and</strong> 1 initiative <strong>of</strong> excellence<br />

(IDEX). This success was the result <strong>of</strong> strong motivation on<br />

the part <strong>of</strong> the Institute’s teams in response to the PIA calls<br />

<strong>for</strong> projects, at a time the Institute was undergoing major internal<br />

changes. IFSTTAR’s strong regional presence was a<br />

key factor in this success, as it facilitated the preparation <strong>of</strong><br />

proposals with close links to the regional dynamics created by<br />

Research / Academic Clusters (PRES) <strong>and</strong> Competitiveness<br />

Clusters. All IFSTTAR’s sites are involved in PIA projects, as<br />

7 <strong>of</strong> the projects involving IFSTTAR are in Île-de-France (the<br />

Greater Paris Region, 5 are in Rhône-Alpes, 2 are in Provence -<br />

Alpes - Côtes-d’Azur, 2 in the West <strong>and</strong> 1 in Nord-Pas-de-Calais.<br />

The research issues that are tackled by the winning projects<br />

involve many fields <strong>and</strong> varied disciplines. In a way, the scope<br />

<strong>of</strong> the PIA projects cover the range <strong>of</strong> the Institute’s activities<br />

comprehensively: <strong>transport</strong>ation, the environment, natural<br />

hazards, sustainable constructions, planning <strong>and</strong> urban issues...<br />

which are approached from a variety <strong>of</strong> angles that<br />

bring into play mathematics, physics, medicine, economics<br />

<strong>and</strong> the life <strong>science</strong>s.<br />

Clearly, IFSTTAR has comprehensively adopted the PIA procedure<br />

<strong>and</strong> the implementation <strong>of</strong> the 17 winning projects should<br />

have a powerful knock-on effect on all the Institute’s activities<br />

in the coming years.<br />
