volume. This course is designed for students who do not meet<br />
the entrance requirements for MAT-121. Not open to students<br />
who have completed MAT-201, MAT-201L2, or MAT-201L3<br />

Introduction to selected ethnic musics that flourish in the<br />
United States including: Hispanic/Latino, Chicano/Mexican-<br />
American, Black African-American, Native American, Asian-<br />
American, Pacific Islander, and European traditions. The<br />
course focuses on the relation <strong>of</strong> musical genres and<br />
movements to the history <strong>of</strong> the United States and to the<br />
society and culture <strong>of</strong> the country.<br />

A survey <strong>of</strong> the history <strong>of</strong> vocal and instrumental jazz music<br />
from the late 1800's to the present covering the important jazz<br />
styles along with the artists who created them and the cultural,<br />
social, political, and economic factors which influenced the art<br />
form. The influence <strong>of</strong> such social themes as slavery, racial<br />
segregation, the civil rights movement, and immigration on jazz<br />
will be studied.<br />

sound; intervals; diatonic scales and triads; and diatonic<br />
chords. Development <strong>of</strong> skills in handwritten notation and aural<br />
identification <strong>of</strong> musical phenomena is expected.<br />
