BA Honours Dance (1 Year Completion Award) HE What will I study? The 1 year Completion Award prepares Full- Time students for professional careers in a wide range of dance disciplines. The course provides an enhanced learning and creative experience in a nurturing and supportive environment. A carefully balanced and holistic approach is taken to ensure that the physical and emotional health and well being of each student is protected. The BA (Honours) in Dance establishes a framework which integrates the theoretical study of dance with practical work. Students begin the process of defining their dance practice in relation to the idea of dance as a socially grounded art form, the significance and potential of which create opportunities and challenges for today’s dancer. The programme aims to develop students’ practical and creative skills to a professional level and to deepen their understanding and awareness of dance as a force in society. An emphasis is placed upon dance practice as existing and developing within the context of an ongoing social and cultural analysis and critique. This perspective privileges the ideas of ‘access’ and ‘participation’. These ideas yield the facilitatory approaches which are a central aspect of the programme content. Teaching is essentially student centred, placing a significant responsibility upon the individual student for his or her own progress and learning, whilst being fully supported throughout the year. This course is validated by Northumbria University. What does the course involve? This course is a one year completion award for those who have gained a qualification up to HND level or equivalent. Selection is based on a practical audition, which includes a demonstration of ballet; contemporary and jazz dance skills. Candidates will also be required to present a two minute self choreographed solo and attend an interview. It is a requirement of this course to attend all timetabled classes and be fully committed to all aspects of professional dance training. This includes technique, choreography, teaching and contextual elements of the course. Students will also have to attend workshops by guest choreographers and companies and attend theatre visits. This one year Completion course will focus on intensive technical training to enable the student to improve as a technically proficient dancer at an optimised pace for each individual learning style. Students will also have opportunities to choreograph, teach and perform in a variety of venues around Scotland. Students will be required to do additional self directed study using lecturer feedback to improve on their inherent potential on both practical and theoretical modules. How will I be assessed? Progression on the programme is achieved following the satisfactory completion of the modules. Students must achieve a minimum average of 40% overall across all modules to pass. The term 'pass' mark should only be used in relation to the figure of 40%. Course assessment will include oral presentations practical forms of assessment. What are the entry requirements? The course is available to international students who require English language skills to IELTS level 6.0. If you are unable to come to interviews and auditions, you need to send a video of yourself demonstrating Ballet, Contemporary and Jazz technique. You are also required to send a 2 min self choreographed solo. Can I go on to further study? (Telford, other colleges and university) You can progress to university to do a Masters in Dance.
