Dance HE
What will I study?
This course embraces all techniques
and disciplines associated with
professional dance training, covering
classical ballet, jazz, commercial, tap
and contemporary. This course is
ideally suited for students who wish
to perform professionally as dancers
in musicals, cabaret, commercial
dance and music videos. Units in
singing and acting enable you to have
a rounded training suitable for a
career in professional dance, while
units in Contextual Studies and
Dance History will provide you with a
theoretical knowledge of dance if you
wish to progress to degree level. You
will take part in several performances
in venues across Edinburgh
throughout their course.
What does the course involve?
It is a requirement of this course to
attend all timetabled classes and be
fully committed to all aspects of
Professional Dance Training. This
includes the singing, acting and
contextual elements of the course. In
Year 1 your practical classes will focus
on intensive technical training to
enable you to improve as a
technically proficient dancer at the
most suitable pace for your individual
learning style. You will be required to
do additional self study using lecturer
feedback to improve on your inherent
potential. In Year 2 you will continue
with further technical training while
the focus will shift to performance
styles, skills in picking up dance
choreography, audition technique and
preparation for industry.
How will I be assessed?
Course assessment will include: oral
presentations, projects, written
assignments and performance. The
latter will be by performance and
demonstration of practical class work,
solos and group pieces. You will be
expected to write essays throughout
this course. A continual digital video
log of your progress will be recorded
for your own self evaluation.
What are the entry requirements?
The course is available to
international students who require
English language skills to IELTS level
5.5. If unable to come to interview,
please send a video of performance in
Jazz, Contemporary Ballet, and Tap
dance styles. Also you are required to
send a video of a solo song and
monologue.
Can I go on to further study?
(Telford, other colleges and
university)
You can audition for the 1 year
completion BA (Hons) programme at
Edinburgh's Telford College or other
Higher Education institutions across
the country.
Where can this course lead me
when I finish studying?
This course is ideal for those who
may want to work as commercial
dancers in musical theatre, summer
seasons, pantomimes, cabaret, cruise
ships etc.
