Dance HE<br />

What will I study?<br />

This course embraces all techniques<br />

and disciplines associated with<br />

professional dance training, covering<br />

classical ballet, jazz, commercial, tap<br />

and contemporary. This course is<br />

ideally suited for students who wish<br />

to perform professionally as dancers<br />

in musicals, cabaret, commercial<br />

dance and music videos. Units in<br />

singing and acting enable you to have<br />

a rounded training suitable for a<br />

career in professional dance, while<br />

units in Contextual Studies and<br />

Dance History will provide you with a<br />

theoretical knowledge of dance if you<br />

wish to progress to degree level. You<br />

will take part in several performances<br />

in venues across Edinburgh<br />

throughout their course.<br />

What does the course involve?<br />

It is a requirement of this course to<br />

attend all timetabled classes and be<br />

fully committed to all aspects of<br />

Professional Dance Training. This<br />

includes the singing, acting and<br />

contextual elements of the course. In<br />

Year 1 your practical classes will focus<br />

on intensive technical training to<br />

enable you to improve as a<br />

technically proficient dancer at the<br />

most suitable pace for your individual<br />

learning style. You will be required to<br />

do additional self study using lecturer<br />

feedback to improve on your inherent<br />

potential. In Year 2 you will continue<br />

with further technical training while<br />

the focus will shift to performance<br />

styles, skills in picking up dance<br />

choreography, audition technique and<br />

preparation for industry.<br />

How will I be assessed?<br />

Course assessment will include: oral<br />

presentations, projects, written<br />

assignments and performance. The<br />

latter will be by performance and<br />

demonstration of practical class work,<br />

solos and group pieces. You will be<br />

expected to write essays throughout<br />

this course. A continual digital video<br />

log of your progress will be recorded<br />

for your own self evaluation.<br />

What are the entry requirements?<br />

The course is available to<br />

international students who require<br />

English language skills to IELTS level<br />

5.5. If unable to come to interview,<br />

please send a video of performance in<br />

Jazz, Contemporary Ballet, and Tap<br />

dance styles. Also you are required to<br />

send a video of a solo song and<br />

monologue.<br />

Can I go on to further study?<br />

(<strong>Telford</strong>, other colleges and<br />

university)<br />

You can audition for the 1 year<br />

completion BA (Hons) programme at<br />

<strong>Edinburgh's</strong> <strong>Telford</strong> <strong>College</strong> or other<br />

Higher Education institutions across<br />

the country.<br />

Where can this course lead me<br />

when I finish studying?<br />

This course is ideal for those who<br />

may want to work as commercial<br />

dancers in musical theatre, summer<br />

seasons, pantomimes, cabaret, cruise<br />

ships etc.<br />
