HNC Engineering Systems
with Renewable Energy HE
What will I study?
The HNC Engineering Systems with Renewable Energy
award aims to develop candidate’s abilities to apply
analysis and synthesis skills to the solution of
engineering problems. Candidates learn to break down
full engineering systems into component areas in order
to examine how they function and contribute to the full
system. Typical areas studied include; power
transmission and generation systems, temperature
control systems, robotic systems, measurement and
monitoring systems and renewable energy systems. The
individual units studied on the course are; Maths,
Communication, Principles of Engineering Systems,
Engineering Measurement and System Monitoring,
Renewable Energy Systems, Thermofluids, Quality
Management, Single Phase AC Circuits and Engineering
Graded Unit.
Our new renewable energy centre equipped with the
latest micro-renewable energy technology will give
candidates the opportunity to work on fully functional
test rigs to enhance the learning experience.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment is continuous throughout the course and
will normally occur about every 4 weeks. The course
also has a Graded Unit external examination which is
held at the end of the session.
What are the entry requirements?
You must have an English language standard of IELTS 5.5
or one of the following: TOEFL Paper 513 and above and
the equivalent SQA Higher level in maths and physics.
This would be an ideal course for international students
who intend to go onto a degree level course at University
to study a number of different engineering areas, such as
mechanical, electrical and renewable energy. The course
would normally gain entry to year 1 of a degree course.
Can I go on to further study?

In Edinburgh we have several universities offering HND
and Degree level programmes. There are Mechanical,
Electrical, Electronic and Renewable Energy courses, and
by completing the HNC you would be giving yourself an
excellent opportunity of gaining a place.
Where can this course lead me when I finish studying?
HNC and HND Engineering qualifications equip
candidates to seek employment in a wide range of
industrial, service, public and renewable energy sector
organisations. Market research indicates that HNC and
HND Engineering awards are still regarded as the
minimum qualifications required by many organisations
to work at engineering technician level.
