HND Theatre Costume
Interpretation HE
What will I study?
This course combines the study of the following units, all
of which are mandatory:
History of costume: from primitive times to the present
day, including the relevant social history.
History of theatre: covering the same period of history,
this unit includes information on scenic design, history,
plays and acting styles of the time.
Ladies and gents costume cutting and construction:
this unit follows the history course with set assignments
at regular intervals.
Design and interpretation: in this unit you will
collaborate with performing arts students and lecturers,
becoming involved in a live performance.
2-dimensional decorative: research and practice of a
variety of decorative techniques including fabric dyes and
printing inks, hand and machine stitch and textile
manipulation techniques.
3-dimensional costume props: this unit covers the
basic core skills involved in mask, millinery and accessory
making.
Business and management: this unit equips you with
the inside knowledge necessary for a career in the theatre
and film.
Sewing and construction techniques: starting at the
very beginning, this unit covers a range of basic and more
advanced sewing skills, together with the use of domestic
and industrial machinery.
Core skills: the following core skills are integrated into
the programme: communication, research, IT, working
with others, cutting and construction processes, and
theatrical technique.
How will I be assessed?
Course assessment will include projects; practical
exercises.
Will there be work experience?
You will undertake an industrial placement in your
second year.
What are the entry requirements?
You will require English language skills to IELTS level 5.5.
You must send a portfolio with your application. This
should contain drawings, designs and sketchbooks,
evidence of sewing skills where possible and should
demonstrate an interest in the theatre.

You may choose to apply for a degree level course in
related specialist subjects.
Where can this course lead me when I finish studying?
On completion of this course you will be sufficiently
skilled to seek employment in a choice of costume
related careers in theatre, film and television. Other
opportunities exist in the leisure industry in costume
workshops, historical re-enactments and theme parks.
