HND Theatre Costume<br />
Interpretation HE<br />
What will I study?<br />
This course combines the study of the following units, all<br />
of which are mandatory:<br />
History of costume: from primitive times to the present<br />
day, including the relevant social history.<br />
History of theatre: covering the same period of history,<br />
this unit includes information on scenic design, history,<br />
plays and acting styles of the time.<br />
Ladies and gents costume cutting and construction:<br />
this unit follows the history course with set assignments<br />
at regular intervals.<br />
Design and interpretation: in this unit you will<br />
collaborate with performing arts students and lecturers,<br />
becoming involved in a live performance.<br />
2-dimensional decorative: research and practice of a<br />
variety of decorative techniques including fabric dyes and<br />
printing inks, hand and machine stitch and textile<br />
manipulation techniques.<br />
3-dimensional costume props: this unit covers the<br />
basic core skills involved in mask, millinery and accessory<br />
making.<br />
Business and management: this unit equips you with<br />
the inside knowledge necessary for a career in the theatre<br />
and film.<br />
Sewing and construction techniques: starting at the<br />
very beginning, this unit covers a range of basic and more<br />
advanced sewing skills, together with the use of domestic<br />
and industrial machinery.<br />
Core skills: the following core skills are integrated into<br />
the programme: communication, research, IT, working<br />
with others, cutting and construction processes, and<br />
theatrical technique.<br />
How will I be assessed?<br />
Course assessment will include projects; practical<br />
exercises.<br />
Will there be work experience?<br />
You will undertake an industrial placement in your<br />
second year.<br />
What are the entry requirements?<br />
You will require English language skills to IELTS level 5.5.<br />
You must send a portfolio with your application. This<br />
should contain drawings, designs and sketchbooks,<br />
evidence of sewing skills where possible and should<br />
demonstrate an interest in the theatre.<br />

You may choose to apply for a degree level course in<br />
related specialist subjects.<br />
Where can this course lead me when I finish studying?<br />
On completion of this course you will be sufficiently<br />
skilled to seek employment in a choice of costume<br />
related careers in theatre, film and television. Other<br />
opportunities exist in the leisure industry in costume<br />
workshops, historical re-enactments and theme parks.<br />
