HNC/D Dental Technology HE<br />

What will I study?<br />

Registration with the General Dental Council<br />

is compulsory for Dental Technicians. This<br />

Higher National Certificate together with<br />

the locally devised Dental Technology level 6<br />

units now form the Edinburgh’s <strong>Telford</strong><br />

<strong>College</strong> Diploma in Dental Technology.<br />

Successful completion of this course will<br />

lead to registration with the General Dental<br />

Council. The course is designed to equip<br />

students with the knowledge, and<br />

understanding required to develop the skills<br />

needed to function effectively in the dental<br />

technology profession.<br />

What does the course involve?<br />

This course builds on the level 6 units gained<br />

in the first year. The course consists of eleven<br />

units worth 12 HN credits. The areas covered<br />

are: dental professional studies; dental biomaterials;<br />

oral and facial anatomy; removable<br />

prosthodontics; partial and complete<br />

dentures; fixed prosthodontics including<br />

bonded restorations and orthodontic<br />

technology studies and a Graded Unit.<br />

How will I be assessed?<br />

There is continuous assessment throughout<br />

each unit, consisting of a combination of<br />

closed book assessments, written<br />

assignments, group presentations, practical<br />

exercises and creating practical artefacts.<br />

There will be a Graded Unit which involves<br />

planning a practical exercise, being tested<br />

on your practical skill performance under<br />

controlled timed conditions and evaluating<br />

your performance.<br />

Will there be work experience?<br />

You will do at least one day work placement<br />

within a dental laboratory. Each student will<br />

be required to complete their log-book<br />

when attending placement.<br />

What are the entry requirements?<br />

Candidates who do not have English as their<br />

first language, should possess level 5.5 in<br />

<strong>International</strong> English Language Testing<br />

System (IELTS) as a minimum or equivalent.<br />

Can I go on to further study?<br />

(<strong>Telford</strong>, other colleges and university)<br />

Higher National Diploma – Dental<br />

Technology.<br />

Where can this course lead me when I<br />

finish studying?<br />

You can work as a registered dental<br />

technician in the NHS sector, general<br />

practice laboratories, commercial<br />

laboratories. Industry trade representative.<br />

Alternatively, you might wish to become<br />

self-employed.<br />
