International Foundation
Programme for University (IFPU) A F
THIS PROGRAMME IS FOR STUDENTS WHO
WANT TO GO TO UNIVERSITY BUT WHO DO
NOT HAVE THE NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS.
We provide specialist Foundation Programmes depending on what it
is you would like to study at University. When you apply to us, we
will advise which subjects you should be studying and this will
determine your exclusive programme.
The qualifications that you will study on the International
Foundation Programme for University are Scottish Highers,
which are globally recognised. Completion of 4 Scottish Highers
will usually grant entry to all UK Universities, but this will differ
depending on what course you want to study. Please note that
some science, medicine and law courses require 5 Highers and
we advise that you check entry requirements with your
preferred university.
The International Foundation Programme runs from August to
May and you will be examined in May/June. The exams you sit are
set by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) and the results
are graded A-C. You will be taught in small classes of around 15-20
people and this may include UK students as well as other
International students.
Progression
Upon successful completion, you should be able to progress on to
University anywhere in the UK. Examples of grades accepted by
local universities for some courses in 2010 were:
• With Higher passes at BBBB – you can apply to study Business
Management with Industrial Placement at Heriot-Watt
University.
• With Higher passes at AABB – you can apply to study Civil
Engineering at Heriot-Watt University.
• With Higher passes at BBB – you can apply to study
International Hospitality Management at Queen Margaret
University.
Required university grades change from year to year.
Entry requirements
You must have IELTS 5.0 or equivalent and at least 10 years of
schooling. Some Highers command a lot of essay writing and
students would benefit from a stronger level of English eg IELTS
5.5/6.0.
