not consumed, O sons of Jacob. Yet from the days of your fathers you
have gone away from My ordinances and have not kept them. Return
to Me, and I will return to you, says the Lord of hosts. But you said, In
what way shall we return? Will a man rob God? Yet you have robbed
Me! But you say, In what way have we robbed You? In tithes and
offerings. You are cursed with a curse, for you have robbed Me, even
this whole nation. Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, that there
may be food in My house, and prove Me now in this, says the Lord of
hosts, if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for
you such blessing that there will not be room enough to receive it. And
I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, so that he will not destroy the
fruit of your ground, nor shall the vine fail to bear fruit for you in the
field, says the Lord of hosts; And all nations will call you blessed, For
you will be a delightful land, says the Lord of hosts.”
The first thing to note here is that the Lord starts out by saying that He
“does not change.” The same Lord who told His people to tithe here in
Malachi has not changed his mind about His people tithing today. It is
not “legalistic” to believe that the Lord’s instruction about tithing is
still valid. God’s word is everlasting and although the manifestation of
the law has changed, His Word/Law is eternal. For example, the ten
commandments were not done away with after Jesus came. They were
fulfilled by Jesus and they are still being fulfilled in those who have
them written on their hearts by the Holy Spirit given to us in the New
Covenant. Likewise, the tithe has not been abolished either. We can
now tithe with New Covenant hearts, out of loving obedience to the
Father, and not just out of ritual obligation.
The second thing to notice is that the tithe is one of the ways in which
the Lord said we “return to Him.” We return to the Lord when we
obey His covenant precepts which He has set forth in His Eternal
Word. The Lord’s Covenants, which He has initiated with mankind,
are everlasting and contain many promises for our inheritance and
instructions for obedience. Many Christians simply write off God’s
covenant principles as irrelevant by saying that Jesus did away with the
Old Covenant by being a fulfillment of the law. Yes, Jesus is the
perfect fulfillment of the law, but we are “in Him” and therefore our
lives are a “living law” reflecting God’s “perfect law of liberty” written
