Directions<br />

For this skills evaluation checklist, students will tie a clove hitch around an object. Because the open<br />

clove hitch cannot be slipped onto an object with no free end (such as the center of a hoseline), this<br />

method is used on objects with no free end or with a distant free end.<br />

• Piece of rope (for example, 6-foot to 20-<br />

foot [1.8 m to 6 m] length of ½-inch [13<br />

mm] rope)<br />

1. Make one complete loop around the object, crossing the working<br />

end over the standing part.<br />

2. Complete the round turn about the object just above the first loop<br />

as shown.<br />

3. Pass the working end under the upper wrap, just above the cross.<br />

4. Set the hitch by pulling.<br />
