Evaluation Checklist<br />
Objective :<br />
Locate and extinguish hidden fires.<br />
1. Confirm order with officer to overhaul.<br />
<strong>Task</strong> Steps 1st 2nd<br />
2. Locate area(s) with potential hidden or smoldering fire.<br />
a. Use heat detector or thermal imaging device.<br />
b. Observe fire area to detect smoking or smoldering materials –<br />
watch, listen, feel.<br />
c. Observe burn and smoke patterns.<br />
d. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment, including<br />
respiratory protection.<br />
3. Remove ceiling and wall covering and insulation.<br />
a. Begin with area closest to hidden or smoldering fire.<br />
b. Overhaul area until unburned structural materials are visible.<br />
c. Preserve potential evidence for fire cause investigation.<br />
d. Minimize damage when possible.<br />
4. Extinguish hidden and smoldering fires with small handline.<br />
a. Use minimal water for extinguishment.<br />
b. Complete extinguishment – no hidden or smoldering fires<br />
remain.<br />
c. Remove stuffed materials such as mattresses from structure<br />
and overhaul outside.<br />
5. Report to officer completion of assigned task.<br />
