Evaluation Checklist<br />
®<br />
Objective: Ventilate a pitched roof. (NFPA 1001, 5.3.12)<br />
1. Confirm order with officer to ventilate roof.<br />
2. Size up scene for any hazards. (verbalize to evaluator)<br />
3. Select location for ventilation.<br />
<strong>Task</strong> Steps 1 st 2nd<br />
4. Outline ventilation opening with pick head axe or other similar tool. (must be<br />
at least 4’ by 4’ opening)<br />
5. Cut roof deck across rafters on the high side of the roof parallel to the ridge.<br />
6. Cut roof deck on furthest side of ventilation opening perpendicular to the cut<br />
in Step 5.<br />
7. Cut roof deck on opposite side of cut made in Step 6.<br />
<strong>Task</strong> Steps 1 st 2nd<br />
8. Complete the ventilation opening by cutting between the bottom of the two<br />
parallel cuts made in Steps 6 and 7.<br />
9. Remove the decking from the ventilation opening with axe or pike pole.<br />
10. Plunge down through the ceiling using pike pole working from upwind side of<br />
ventilation opening.<br />
11. Report to officer completion of the assigned task.<br />
