<strong>The</strong> QSF2.8 was unveiled<br />
at INTERMAT, a trade<br />
show <strong>in</strong> Par<strong>is</strong> <strong>in</strong> April 2012.<br />
<strong>The</strong> 49- to 74-horsepower<br />
(37-55 kW) eng<strong>in</strong>e <strong>is</strong> designed<br />
to meet U.S. EPA Tier 4<br />

Last fall, the QSK95 was launched with<br />
over 4000-hp (2983 kW) as the world’s<br />
most powerful high-speed diesel (page 28).<br />
<strong>The</strong> 95-liter, 16-cyl<strong>in</strong>der eng<strong>in</strong>e was the first<br />
to be <strong>in</strong>troduced <strong>in</strong> a new high-horsepower<br />
diesel and gas platform from Cumm<strong>in</strong>s.<br />
With <strong>th<strong>is</strong></strong> announcement came multiple<br />
plant expansion announcements <strong>in</strong> and<br />
around the Seymour Eng<strong>in</strong>e Plant<br />
<strong>in</strong> southern Indiana.<br />
In the spr<strong>in</strong>g of 2012, on the opposite<br />
end of the horsepower range, the QSF2.8<br />
eng<strong>in</strong>e was launched for the compact<br />
equipment market. <strong>The</strong> 4-cyl<strong>in</strong>der eng<strong>in</strong>e<br />
extends the Cumm<strong>in</strong>s horse power range<br />
down to 49-hp. <strong>The</strong> QSF2.8 <strong>is</strong> the smallest<br />
eng<strong>in</strong>e to be <strong>in</strong>troduced by Cumm<strong>in</strong>s for<br />

Natural Gas Eng<strong>in</strong>es<br />
Cumm<strong>in</strong>s Westport Inc. (CWI) <strong>is</strong> a jo<strong>in</strong>t<br />
venture establ<strong>is</strong>hed <strong>in</strong> 2001 between<br />
Cumm<strong>in</strong>s and Westport Innovations Inc.<br />
of Vancouver, Brit<strong>is</strong>h Columbia that has<br />
sold more than 35,000 alternative fuel<br />
eng<strong>in</strong>es worldwide.<br />
<strong>The</strong> jo<strong>in</strong>t venture’s natural gas eng<strong>in</strong>es<br />
are available as factory-<strong>in</strong>stalled options<br />
from more than 50 truck and bus<br />
manufacturers, establ<strong>is</strong>h<strong>in</strong>g CWI as<br />
a lead<strong>in</strong>g global provider of midrange<br />
automotive natural gas eng<strong>in</strong>es.<br />
Recent advances <strong>in</strong> the extraction<br />
of natural gas <strong>in</strong> North America and<br />
elsewhere are encourag<strong>in</strong>g natural<br />
gas producers and d<strong>is</strong>tributors to look<br />
at heavy-duty transportation as a new<br />
market, and <strong>is</strong> also lead<strong>in</strong>g governments<br />
to view natural gas as one way to reduce<br />
their dependence on oil imports.<br />
<strong>The</strong>se new developments have also<br />
resulted <strong>in</strong> record low prices for natural gas,<br />
a benefit that translates <strong>in</strong>to tremendous<br />
fuel cost sav<strong>in</strong>gs opportunities for the<br />
transportation <strong>in</strong>dustry.<br />
<strong>The</strong> low fuel cost, comb<strong>in</strong>ed with <strong>in</strong>creased<br />
reliability and performance with Cumm<strong>in</strong>s<br />
Westport’s ISL G eng<strong>in</strong>e, has driven<br />
significant new opportunities for natural<br />
gas, particularly <strong>in</strong> the cab-over refuse<br />
truck market where natural gas trucks<br />
now account for 50 percent of truck orders.<br />
<strong>The</strong> on-highway truck segment<br />
activity <strong>is</strong> <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g with develop<strong>in</strong>g<br />
fuel <strong>in</strong>frastructure announcements.<br />
And Cumm<strong>in</strong>s <strong>is</strong> respond<strong>in</strong>g with<br />
a 12-liter natural gas truck eng<strong>in</strong>e,<br />
the Cumm<strong>in</strong>s Westport ISX12 G.<br />
Th<strong>is</strong> will be available <strong>in</strong> early 2013.<br />
“<strong>The</strong> opportunity to significantly reduce<br />
fleet fuel costs with natural gas, and the<br />
availability of Cumm<strong>in</strong>s Westport eng<strong>in</strong>es<br />
<strong>in</strong> a wide range of applications, <strong>is</strong> creat<strong>in</strong>g<br />
significant <strong>in</strong>terest with customers,” said Jim<br />
Arthurs, President of Cumm<strong>in</strong>s Westport.<br />
Perhaps the most v<strong>is</strong>ible example of the<br />
r<strong>is</strong><strong>in</strong>g popularity of natural gas eng<strong>in</strong>es<br />
are transit buses and refuse trucks. Cities<br />
across the world have been turn<strong>in</strong>g to<br />
natural gas eng<strong>in</strong>es for their mass transit<br />
and trash collection systems to reduce<br />
pollution and provide some alternatives to<br />
the price fluctuations <strong>in</strong> petroleum-based<br />
fuels <strong>in</strong> recent years.<br />
Cumm<strong>in</strong>s natural gas eng<strong>in</strong>es are now<br />
power<strong>in</strong>g bus and truck fleets on every<br />
cont<strong>in</strong>ent except Antarctica.<br />
Cumm<strong>in</strong>s Westport, Cumm<strong>in</strong>s has been<br />
produc<strong>in</strong>g natural gas eng<strong>in</strong>es outside the<br />
jo<strong>in</strong>t venture for the off-highway market for<br />
several years.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Company <strong>is</strong> currently at work on a<br />
natural gas version of the QSK95 eng<strong>in</strong>e,<br />
the Company’s powerful high-speed diesel,<br />
unveiled <strong>in</strong> November 2011. And <strong>in</strong> March<br />
2012, Cumm<strong>in</strong>s announced it had started<br />
development on a 15-liter heavy-duty<br />
natural gas eng<strong>in</strong>e to help meet demand for<br />
on-highway applications that <strong>is</strong> expected to<br />
be <strong>in</strong> limited production by 2014.<br />
That eng<strong>in</strong>e will be larger than those built<br />
by Cumm<strong>in</strong>s Westport, which range <strong>in</strong> size<br />
from 5.9 liters to the 12-liter ISX12 G now<br />
under development.<br />
Remanufactur<strong>in</strong>g<br />
Remanufactur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>is</strong> Cumm<strong>in</strong>s’ first and<br />
oldest “green bus<strong>in</strong>ess” and the ultimate<br />
form of reduce, reuse and recycle. Through<br />
remanufactur<strong>in</strong>g, Cumm<strong>in</strong>s <strong>is</strong> able to take<br />
eng<strong>in</strong>es and parts at the end of their useful<br />
life and return them to productive use.<br />
Do<strong>in</strong>g so significantly reduces the amount<br />
of Cumm<strong>in</strong>s product <strong>in</strong> landfills and it saves<br />
energy that would otherw<strong>is</strong>e be used to<br />
manufacture new products.<br />
Cumm<strong>in</strong>s’ remanufactur<strong>in</strong>g bus<strong>in</strong>ess,<br />
or ReCon as it’s called, <strong>is</strong> part of the New<br />
and ReCon Parts function of the Company’s<br />
Eng<strong>in</strong>e Bus<strong>in</strong>ess. With sales of $1 billion<br />
<strong>in</strong> 2011, Cumm<strong>in</strong>s ReCon bus<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>is</strong> an<br />
<strong>in</strong>dustry leader and a global bus<strong>in</strong>ess with<br />
remanufactur<strong>in</strong>g operations worldwide.<br />
<strong>The</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess offers 1,000 components<br />
and 2,000 eng<strong>in</strong>es.<br />
In 2011, Cumm<strong>in</strong>s partnered<br />
with the United States Navy<br />
and defense contractor<br />
Alion Science and Technology<br />
to determ<strong>in</strong>e the potential<br />
viability of algae-based<br />
renewable fuel as a<br />
“drop <strong>in</strong>” replacement for<br />
petroleum based diesel<br />
<strong>in</strong> mar<strong>in</strong>e applications.<br />
<strong>The</strong> year-long program<br />
<strong>in</strong>cluded an evaluation of<br />
a 50 percent blend of the<br />
renewable fuel compared<br />
to the basel<strong>in</strong>e Navy diesel<br />
fuel on performance,<br />
em<strong>is</strong>sions and durability<br />
of a QSB5.9 mar<strong>in</strong>e eng<strong>in</strong>e.<br />
<strong>The</strong> overall results were<br />
very encourag<strong>in</strong>g, enabl<strong>in</strong>g<br />
the Navy to move to the<br />
second phase of the<br />
program <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g field trials.<br />
Cumm<strong>in</strong>s also cont<strong>in</strong>ued<br />
the development of<br />
analytical tools to model<br />
the combustion performance<br />
of liquid renewable fuels,<br />
such as the algae fuel and<br />
gaseous biofuels such as<br />
landfill gas, producer (wood)<br />
gas, biodigestor gas (such<br />
as from dairy farms) and<br />
waste treatment plant gas.<br />
Th<strong>is</strong> added capability<br />
supports the development<br />
of the next generation of<br />
eng<strong>in</strong>es that will be able<br />
to run on a wide variety<br />
of renewable fuels.<br />
