Mak<strong>in</strong>g a difference<br />

for women at Cumm<strong>in</strong>s<br />

When T<strong>in</strong>a Vujovich was asked to sponsor<br />

<strong>The</strong> result: More than 270 employees<br />

Cumm<strong>in</strong>s’ first Women’s Aff<strong>in</strong>ity Group <strong>in</strong><br />

showed up for the first meet<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

2001, she wasn’t quite sure what to expect.<br />

“I found several women who were<br />

dedicated to help<strong>in</strong>g one another,” said<br />

Vujovich, retired Vice President of Market<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and Environmental Policy at the Company.<br />

“We put together a team that <strong>in</strong>st<strong>in</strong>ctively<br />

set about survey<strong>in</strong>g the broad population<br />

of women at Cumm<strong>in</strong>s to learn what it<br />

was that they were look<strong>in</strong>g for from the<br />

aff<strong>in</strong>ity group. Suddenly, we knew what<br />

we needed to do.”<br />

of Southern Indiana <strong>is</strong> one of Cumm<strong>in</strong>s’<br />

oldest aff<strong>in</strong>ity groups, closely tied to the<br />

needs of its target audience and provid<strong>in</strong>g<br />

ass<strong>is</strong>tance <strong>in</strong> key areas such as career<br />

development, bus<strong>in</strong>ess enhancement,<br />

recruit<strong>in</strong>g and retention.<br />

<strong>The</strong> WAG, which celebrated its<br />

10th anniversary <strong>in</strong> 2011, <strong>is</strong> one of more<br />

than 40 aff<strong>in</strong>ity groups at Cumm<strong>in</strong>s located<br />

across the world. <strong>The</strong>se groups are<br />

organized around a variety of dimensions<br />

of diversity: gender, race, ethnicity, special<br />

needs, veteran status and country of orig<strong>in</strong>.<br />

“<strong>The</strong> <strong>in</strong>ner work<strong>in</strong>gs are left to each circle<br />

to decide what will work best for their<br />

group,” said Jessica Kuehner, Co-Leader<br />

of the aff<strong>in</strong>ity group now. “WAG provides<br />

guidel<strong>in</strong>es to the circles on how to decide<br />

their topics, meet<strong>in</strong>g agendas for the first<br />

few meet<strong>in</strong>gs to get the circles started and<br />

feedback gathered from past sessions on<br />

what works well and <strong>is</strong> popular.”<br />

Mentor<strong>in</strong>g circles, however, are just one<br />

of many projects undertaken by the group.<br />

<strong>The</strong> WAG’s Executive Speakers Series<br />

<strong>The</strong> WAG has also successfully<br />

campaigned for rooms <strong>in</strong> many<br />

Cumm<strong>in</strong>s facilities for nurs<strong>in</strong>g mothers.<br />

F<strong>in</strong>ally, the group frequently works<br />

with women’s groups at other Cumm<strong>in</strong>s<br />

facilities around the world to help them<br />

launch their own aff<strong>in</strong>ity group and<br />

share ideas for programs.<br />

Now, the aff<strong>in</strong>ity group’s Co-Leaders<br />

Jamie Freeman and Kuehner are plann<strong>in</strong>g<br />

for the future and the <strong>is</strong>sues the WAG<br />

will champion for the next 10 years.<br />

“Career development and network<strong>in</strong>g<br />

have been long-stand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>itiatives<br />

throughout our ex<strong>is</strong>tence,” said Amy<br />

Liimatta, a member of the group s<strong>in</strong>ce<br />

its <strong>in</strong>ception who also served a st<strong>in</strong>t as its<br />

leader. “It’s someth<strong>in</strong>g women very clearly<br />

wanted from the group.”<br />

Mentor<strong>in</strong>g circles, for example, have<br />

been a very successful <strong>in</strong>itiative offered by<br />

the group, br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g together successful<br />

women at Cumm<strong>in</strong>s and newcomers to<br />

the Company. In a mentor<strong>in</strong>g circle, the<br />

protégés are paired with one male and<br />

one female mentor, allow<strong>in</strong>g more women<br />

to have access to company leaders than<br />

enables top executives at Cumm<strong>in</strong>s to<br />

share career advice with others. <strong>The</strong> WAG<br />

also developed D<strong>is</strong>cover Cumm<strong>in</strong>s, an<br />

event to help new employees learn more<br />

about the Company by v<strong>is</strong>it<strong>in</strong>g booths<br />

sponsored by various functions with<strong>in</strong><br />

Cumm<strong>in</strong>s. (Today, D<strong>is</strong>cover Cumm<strong>in</strong>s <strong>is</strong><br />

hosted by LAUNCH – Leaders Advanc<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Unit<strong>in</strong>g and Network<strong>in</strong>g Cumm<strong>in</strong>s Hires,<br />

an aff<strong>in</strong>ity group that focuses on help<strong>in</strong>g<br />

employees who have been with Cumm<strong>in</strong>s<br />

for less than five years.)<br />

to champion women for years to come.”<br />
