<strong>The</strong> values of <strong>in</strong>tegrity, <strong>in</strong>novation and corporate responsibility<br />

have deep roots at Cumm<strong>in</strong>s, go<strong>in</strong>g back to the Company’s<br />

found<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> 1919. Three men helped shape the Company<br />

<strong>in</strong> each of these areas. <strong>The</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>fluence <strong>is</strong> still felt today.<br />

INNOVATION<br />

INTEGRITY<br />

Introduction<br />

Clessie Cumm<strong>in</strong>s (1888-1968) was<br />

a driver and mechanic for a Columbus, Ind.<br />

bus<strong>in</strong>essman. Cumm<strong>in</strong>s had a fasc<strong>in</strong>ation<br />

for diesel eng<strong>in</strong>es.<br />

Born on a farm <strong>in</strong> Indiana, Cumm<strong>in</strong>s was<br />

W.G. Irw<strong>in</strong> (1866-1943) was the<br />

bus<strong>in</strong>essman who hired Clessie Cumm<strong>in</strong>s<br />

as h<strong>is</strong> driver and mechanic. <strong>The</strong> son of<br />

a banker, he pursued profits with a sense<br />

of community m<strong>is</strong>sion.<br />

While he was <strong>in</strong>itially cool to Cumm<strong>in</strong>s’<br />

up, t<strong>in</strong>ker<strong>in</strong>g with gadgets at an early age<br />

promotion of diesel technology, he agreed<br />

and build<strong>in</strong>g a m<strong>in</strong>iature steam eng<strong>in</strong>e at 11.<br />

to let Cumm<strong>in</strong>s use a vacant forge build<strong>in</strong>g<br />

H<strong>is</strong> family eventually moved to Columbus,<br />

as an auto repair shop and even supplied<br />

Ind. where they operated a bus<strong>in</strong>ess mak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

him with some tools.<br />

barrels and casks.<br />

Later, Irw<strong>in</strong> decided to build a garage<br />

He would drop out of school and work for<br />

several Indiana mach<strong>in</strong><strong>is</strong>ts and automakers<br />

before tak<strong>in</strong>g the chauffeur<strong>in</strong>g job. Cumm<strong>in</strong>s<br />

opened a repair shop <strong>in</strong> 1913 <strong>in</strong> addition<br />

to h<strong>is</strong> driv<strong>in</strong>g duties. That bus<strong>in</strong>ess would<br />

become a mach<strong>in</strong>e shop, perform<strong>in</strong>g work<br />

for the military dur<strong>in</strong>g World War I, and then<br />

the Cumm<strong>in</strong>s Eng<strong>in</strong>e Company <strong>in</strong> 1919,<br />

shortly after the war ended.<br />

A prolific <strong>in</strong>ventor and entrepreneur,<br />

Cumm<strong>in</strong>s promoted diesel technology <strong>in</strong><br />

barnstorm<strong>in</strong>g trips across the United States.<br />

He would cont<strong>in</strong>ue <strong>in</strong>vent<strong>in</strong>g throughout<br />

h<strong>is</strong> tenure at the Company and even<br />

after he left Columbus <strong>in</strong> 1945 and<br />

moved to California.<br />

near the family’s home, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g room<br />

for Cumm<strong>in</strong>s to experiment with the<br />

eng<strong>in</strong>es he was so passionate about.<br />

Eventually, Irw<strong>in</strong> agreed to back the creation<br />

of the Cumm<strong>in</strong>s Eng<strong>in</strong>e Company. He was<br />

the source of nearly all of the Company’s<br />

$50,000 start<strong>in</strong>g capital.<br />

<strong>The</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess got off to a rocky start,<br />

however, and both men talked of shutt<strong>in</strong>g<br />

it down. Irw<strong>in</strong>’s family, however, persuaded<br />

him to keep the bus<strong>in</strong>ess go<strong>in</strong>g to provide<br />

jobs for the young men of Columbus.<br />

N<strong>in</strong>eteen years after the Company was<br />

founded, the Cumm<strong>in</strong>s Eng<strong>in</strong>e Company<br />

turned its first profit.<br />

CORPORATE<br />

RESPONSIBILITY<br />

J. Irw<strong>in</strong> Miller (1909-2004) was the grandnephew<br />

of W.G. Irw<strong>in</strong>. Educated at Yale<br />

and Oxford, he jo<strong>in</strong>ed the Company <strong>in</strong><br />

1934, was elected president <strong>in</strong> 1947<br />

and became chairman and CEO <strong>in</strong> 1951.<br />

Under h<strong>is</strong> watch, Cumm<strong>in</strong>s entered<br />

India and Ch<strong>in</strong>a long before most other<br />

American companies. He helped organize<br />

Dr. Mart<strong>in</strong> Luther K<strong>in</strong>g Jr.’s 1963 March<br />

on Wash<strong>in</strong>gton while lead<strong>in</strong>g the National<br />

Council of Churches.<br />

Miller believed passionately that a company<br />

was only as strong as the communities<br />

where it did bus<strong>in</strong>ess and where its<br />

employees lived and worked.<br />

“If previous generations hadn’t done a lot of<br />

personal work and spent money which their<br />

generation was never go<strong>in</strong>g to profit from,<br />

<strong>th<strong>is</strong></strong> wouldn’t be a good community and our<br />

other plant communities wouldn’t be good<br />

communities,” he once said when asked<br />

why the Company <strong>in</strong>vested <strong>in</strong> philanthropy.<br />

“We have an obligation not to use up<br />

that asset but to do as well <strong>in</strong> our time<br />

as every previous generation has <strong>in</strong> its<br />

time,” he added.<br />
