Cumm<strong>in</strong>s’ safest year ever to establ<strong>is</strong>h a culture throughout<br />
the Company where everyone takes responsibility for<br />
safety – leaders, managers and employees.<br />
For the first time, Cumm<strong>in</strong>s met all of<br />
its targets <strong>in</strong> 2011 for the Company’s<br />
key safety performance <strong>in</strong>dicators.<br />
<strong>The</strong> 2011 goals were the toughest the<br />
Company had ever set and came amid<br />
rapid growth for Cumm<strong>in</strong>s, especially<br />
outside the United States.<br />
“<strong>The</strong>se rates are far better compared to the<br />
<strong>in</strong>dustry average and we are <strong>in</strong>deed one of<br />
the best,” said Jim Lyons, Vice President of<br />
Corporate Manufactur<strong>in</strong>g and Chairman of<br />
Cumm<strong>in</strong>s’ Health, Safety and Environment<br />
Council, <strong>in</strong> a podcast to health and safety<br />
leaders around the world.<br />

Among the most notable achievements:<br />

Cumm<strong>in</strong>s recorded a 32 percent<br />
improvement <strong>in</strong> its Incidence Rate<br />
compared to 2010.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Company had a 25 percent<br />
improvement <strong>in</strong> its Severity Lost Work<br />
Day Rate over the same time period.<br />
»»<br />
Cumm<strong>in</strong>s achieved a 34 percent<br />
decrease <strong>in</strong> the Company’s Severity<br />
Case Rate when compared to 2010.<br />
»»<br />
In December of 2011, Cumm<strong>in</strong>s<br />
recorded no Major Injuries and no<br />
Dangerous Occurrences – a first<br />
for the Company s<strong>in</strong>ce 2009.<br />
“But we are on a journey,” Lyons added,<br />
“and ‘Best <strong>in</strong> Class’ <strong>is</strong> simply a milestone<br />
toward becom<strong>in</strong>g ‘world class’ <strong>in</strong> people<br />
safety and health, and creat<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
right environment.”<br />
Cumm<strong>in</strong>s believes strongly that safety<br />
<strong>is</strong> a key component of susta<strong>in</strong>ability.<br />
Our workforce <strong>is</strong> our greatest asset and<br />
protect<strong>in</strong>g that asset <strong>is</strong> critical to the<br />
f<strong>in</strong>ancial well-be<strong>in</strong>g of the Company.<br />
For their part, health and safety leaders<br />
plan to cont<strong>in</strong>ue their aggressive approach,<br />
roll<strong>in</strong>g out a number of <strong>in</strong>itiatives <strong>in</strong> 2012<br />
rang<strong>in</strong>g from a program promot<strong>in</strong>g electrical<br />
safety at all Cumm<strong>in</strong>s facilities to an <strong>in</strong>itiative<br />
focus<strong>in</strong>g on enhanced ergonomics for both<br />
plant and office employees.<br />

<strong>The</strong> D<strong>is</strong>tribution Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Unit (DBU)<br />
held a “Time Out for Safety” event <strong>in</strong><br />
September 2011 where thousands of<br />
employees stopped their normal work<br />
rout<strong>in</strong>e to watch a video featur<strong>in</strong>g their<br />
peers talk<strong>in</strong>g about their on–the-job<br />
<strong>in</strong>juries and the impact they had on<br />
their lives. Employees then d<strong>is</strong>cussed<br />
ways they could make their own<br />
workplaces safer.<br />

<strong>The</strong> DBU also held safety summits<br />
<strong>in</strong> Australia and Africa over the past<br />
year (page 80).<br />

Those events followed a very successful<br />
global workshop <strong>in</strong> 2011 where the<br />
Company’s safety personnel from around<br />
the world gathered <strong>in</strong> Indianapol<strong>is</strong>, Ind.<br />
»»<br />
Employees at Cumm<strong>in</strong>s Turbo<br />
Technologies’ Dewas, India plant<br />
celebrated three years of zero<br />
OSHA <strong>in</strong>cidents <strong>in</strong> October 2011.<br />
TWO KEY DEVELOPMENTS<br />
Health and safety leaders give a lot<br />
of the credit for the record year to<br />
improved technology and a new<br />
communications plan.<br />
Cumm<strong>in</strong>s identifies and assesses<br />
potential safety hazards through the<br />
Company’s Health and Safety Enterpr<strong>is</strong>e<br />
Management System. <strong>The</strong> system sets<br />
key objectives and monitors health and<br />
safety performance <strong>in</strong> a uniform way<br />
across all Company facilities.<br />
