Hedgehog: Big can still be green<br />

eng<strong>in</strong>e, the largest high-speed diesel eng<strong>in</strong>e<br />

potential customers. <strong>The</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>e <strong>is</strong> be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

fuel sav<strong>in</strong>gs of five to ten percent with<br />

a correspond<strong>in</strong>g reduction <strong>in</strong> carbon<br />

dioxide (CO 2<br />

), a key contributor to<br />

greenhouse gases.<br />

In addition to those environmental<br />

benefits, the Hedgehog platform was<br />

designed with remanufactur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d.<br />

Work<strong>in</strong>g from a “clean sheet” on the<br />

QSK95, designers were able to consider<br />

remanufactur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> almost every aspect<br />

of the eng<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

time for mill<strong>in</strong>g dur<strong>in</strong>g remanufactur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

it will be easier to br<strong>in</strong>g the block back<br />

to orig<strong>in</strong>al specifications.<br />

Creat<strong>in</strong>g a new eng<strong>in</strong>e platform also<br />

allowed eng<strong>in</strong>eers to design Hedgehog<br />

with cleaner-burn<strong>in</strong>g natural gas <strong>in</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d.<br />

Leverag<strong>in</strong>g the base architecture of<br />

Hedgehog’s diesel eng<strong>in</strong>e, the natural<br />

gas platform will be fully optimized to<br />

deliver market lead<strong>in</strong>g performance.<br />

“<strong>The</strong> natural gas eng<strong>in</strong>es will not be just a<br />

derivative of the diesel eng<strong>in</strong>es, but uniquely<br />

designed for gas,” said Mark Levett,<br />

<strong>The</strong> Hedgehog family will be grow<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Plans are <strong>in</strong> the works for the QSK120,<br />

add<strong>in</strong>g four cyl<strong>in</strong>ders while us<strong>in</strong>g the same<br />

platform to achieve over 5,000 horsepower.<br />

Applications: <strong>The</strong> QSK95 <strong>is</strong> ideally suited for<br />

applications such as passenger and freight locomotives,<br />

many types of mar<strong>in</strong>e vessels, m<strong>in</strong>e haul trucks and<br />

more. <strong>The</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>e can also be used on offshore oil<br />

and gas platforms for drill<strong>in</strong>g and will power the new<br />

C3000 Series genset from Cumm<strong>in</strong>s Power Generation.<br />

Em<strong>is</strong>sions: <strong>The</strong> QSK95 will meet the most str<strong>in</strong>gent<br />

em<strong>is</strong>sion standards, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g EPA Tier 4 F<strong>in</strong>al tak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

effect <strong>in</strong> 2015. <strong>The</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>e uses the Selective Catalytic<br />

Reduction (SCR) aftertreatment designed by Cumm<strong>in</strong>s<br />

to replace the exhaust muffler.<br />

Production: <strong>The</strong> QSK95 will be built at the<br />

Seymour, Ind. Eng<strong>in</strong>e Plant where $100 million<br />

<strong>is</strong> be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>vested to establ<strong>is</strong>h a new production<br />
