<strong>The</strong> project has been delivered <strong>in</strong><br />

In Brazil, more than 300 employees at all<br />

levels attended the sessions, which were<br />

Diversity Council, and launch<strong>in</strong>g<br />

an aff<strong>in</strong>ity group for apprentices.<br />

<strong>The</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al part <strong>is</strong> a full-day session<br />

conducted with simultaneous translation to<br />

<strong>The</strong> workshop <strong>is</strong> called<br />

“Embrac<strong>in</strong>g Diversity: Your Role<br />

<strong>in</strong> Creat<strong>in</strong>g a W<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g Team.”<br />

teams. Through facilitated d<strong>is</strong>cussion<br />

and group exerc<strong>is</strong>es, managers develop<br />

action plans to ass<strong>is</strong>t them <strong>in</strong> connect<strong>in</strong>g<br />

more productively with employees whose<br />

backgrounds and experiences are different<br />

than theirs. A key challenge <strong>is</strong> to move<br />

their skills from good to great.<br />

Participants are surveyed before the<br />

workshops and 90 and 120 days after<br />

the sessions to gauge the short- and<br />

long-term effects of the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g.<br />

aff<strong>in</strong>ity groups for women, Generation Y,<br />

Afro-Brazilian and Special Needs.<br />

“Our workshops <strong>in</strong> Brazil helped us as<br />

leaders to see opportunities to <strong>in</strong>clude<br />

perspectives that we may not have<br />

previously thought about,” said Lu<strong>is</strong><br />

Pasquotto, Vice President – South America<br />

Area Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Organization. “It’s important<br />

to capture the voices of employees at all<br />

levels. Th<strong>is</strong> workshop helped us red<strong>is</strong>cover<br />

the tremendous advantage our diversity<br />

gives us. Now we have more than a<br />

forum where those voices can be heard<br />

on a regular bas<strong>is</strong>.”<br />

“We saw how passionate employees are<br />

about creat<strong>in</strong>g an <strong>in</strong>clusive environment<br />

where everyone can realize their potential.<br />

Th<strong>is</strong> workshop allowed us to see how<br />

vested employees are <strong>in</strong> our success,<br />

and now we are work<strong>in</strong>g to ensure that we<br />

cont<strong>in</strong>ually look for ways to empower these<br />

employees to share their perspectives.”<br />

Employees give high pra<strong>is</strong>e for these<br />

sessions. Managers believe they are<br />

better equipped to handle difficult situations<br />

as a result of the workshops, and nearly<br />

every employee would recommend the<br />

workshops to colleagues.<br />

OTHER DIVERSITY DEVELOPMENTS<br />

<strong>The</strong> Unleash<strong>in</strong>g the Collective Power of<br />

Groups and Individuals project was one of<br />

several important developments for diversity<br />

at Cumm<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong> 2011-2012. Others <strong>in</strong>clude:<br />

<strong>The</strong> Chairman’s Diversity Council,<br />

compr<strong>is</strong>ed of Chairman and CEO<br />

Tom L<strong>in</strong>ebarger’s leadership team,<br />

met quarterly and d<strong>is</strong>cussed topics such<br />

as emotions and power and <strong>in</strong>fluence <strong>in</strong><br />

the workplace. <strong>The</strong> council d<strong>is</strong>cusses<br />

and implements dec<strong>is</strong>ions related to<br />

diversity strategies, confirm<strong>in</strong>g diversity<br />

as a key Cumm<strong>in</strong>s’ value.<br />

Cumm<strong>in</strong>s added several more employee<br />

resource groups and now has more than<br />

100 aff<strong>in</strong>ity groups and Local Diversity<br />

Councils, spann<strong>in</strong>g 10 countries across<br />

six cont<strong>in</strong>ents.<br />

Cumm<strong>in</strong>s was honored by several<br />

groups for its commitment to diversity<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g DiversityInc, which aga<strong>in</strong> named<br />

Cumm<strong>in</strong>s to its l<strong>is</strong>t of the top companies<br />

for diversity; and the Human Rights<br />

Campaign, the largest advocacy group<br />

for gay, lesbian, b<strong>is</strong>exual and transgender<br />

employees (page 12).<br />
