Very rarely these days <strong>is</strong> Gordon Fykes<br />

asked, “What <strong>is</strong> supplier diversity?”<br />

Instead, Cumm<strong>in</strong>s’ Director of Diversity<br />

Procurement says he <strong>is</strong> <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly asked<br />

by purchas<strong>in</strong>g personnel across the<br />

Company, “How do I develop a strategy<br />

to <strong>in</strong>crease diverse supplier spend<strong>in</strong>g?”<br />

Fykes says there’s a huge difference<br />

between those two questions.<br />

“We’re gett<strong>in</strong>g a lot of requests for a<br />

deeper d<strong>is</strong>cussion,” said Fykes, who<br />

expects he and Supplier Development<br />

Manager Brian Sanders will be on the road<br />

a lot <strong>in</strong> 2012 as a result. “I th<strong>in</strong>k we’re f<strong>in</strong>ally<br />

gett<strong>in</strong>g away from the myth that supplier<br />

diversity <strong>is</strong> simply about giv<strong>in</strong>g away a<br />

slice of the bus<strong>in</strong>ess pie.”<br />

At Cumm<strong>in</strong>s, diversity procurement <strong>is</strong> a key<br />

bus<strong>in</strong>ess strategy with bottom-l<strong>in</strong>e benefits.<br />

Help<strong>in</strong>g diverse suppliers develop and<br />

grow will eventually <strong>in</strong>crease competition<br />

for the Company’s bus<strong>in</strong>ess. That ultimately<br />

results <strong>in</strong> lower prices and better quality for<br />

Cumm<strong>in</strong>s’ purchases.<br />

It also <strong>in</strong>creases economic opportunity<br />

<strong>in</strong> all of the communities where<br />

Cumm<strong>in</strong>s employees live and work and <strong>is</strong><br />

cons<strong>is</strong>tent with the Company’s Corporate<br />

Responsibility value to “serve and improve<br />

the communities <strong>in</strong> which we live.”<br />

A largely U.S. undertak<strong>in</strong>g (although<br />

the concept <strong>is</strong> start<strong>in</strong>g to catch on<br />

elsewhere), diversity procurement has<br />

seen considerable growth at Cumm<strong>in</strong>s.<br />

In 1995, the Company spent $35 million<br />

with diverse suppliers <strong>in</strong> the United States.<br />

Last year, Cumm<strong>in</strong>s recorded $810 million<br />

<strong>in</strong> total diverse supplier spend or<br />

12.2 percent of its total U.S. purchases.<br />

LOOKING BACK<br />

Cumm<strong>in</strong>s’ diversity procurement<br />

program had several highlights <strong>in</strong><br />

2011-2012, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g:<br />

Cumm<strong>in</strong>s <strong>is</strong> up to 25 percent <strong>in</strong><br />

spend<strong>in</strong>g with m<strong>in</strong>ority and womenowned<br />

bus<strong>in</strong>esses to fulfill its contracts<br />

with Chrysler Group LLC, maker of<br />

the Dodge Ram heavy-duty trucks.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Company pushed back its goal to<br />

reach $1 billion <strong>in</strong> spend<strong>in</strong>g on m<strong>in</strong>orityowned<br />

suppliers until 2014 because of<br />

weaken<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the U.S. economy although<br />

Fykes says the Company still might reach<br />

that goal by the end of 2012.<br />

Cumm<strong>in</strong>s expanded its educational<br />

efforts <strong>in</strong> the area of diversity<br />

procurement, sponsor<strong>in</strong>g a competition<br />

at LeMoyne-Owen College <strong>in</strong> Memph<strong>is</strong>,<br />

Tenn. that asked students to develop a<br />

model for a Fortune 500 manufacturer<br />

to <strong>in</strong>crease its bus<strong>in</strong>ess with m<strong>in</strong>ority<br />

suppliers. <strong>The</strong> Company hopes to work<br />

with the h<strong>is</strong>torically black college to<br />

make the FOCUSS (Framework for<br />

Opportunity Convergence and the<br />

Utilization of Susta<strong>in</strong>able Solutions)<br />

competition an annual event to help<br />

develop young entrepreneurs.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Company cont<strong>in</strong>ued work<strong>in</strong>g with<br />

the Diverse Manufactur<strong>in</strong>g Supply Cha<strong>in</strong><br />

Alliance (DMSCA) to help develop diverse<br />

suppliers. Cumm<strong>in</strong>s <strong>is</strong> sponsor<strong>in</strong>g AMG<br />

Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g & Mach<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g of Indianapol<strong>is</strong>,<br />

Ind. <strong>in</strong> the DMSCA tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and two other<br />

Cumm<strong>in</strong>s’ suppliers – Magni-Power Co.<br />

of Wooster, Ohio and GB Manufactur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Co. of Delta, Ohio – are tak<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g on their own.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Company’s participation <strong>in</strong> the<br />

National M<strong>in</strong>ority Supplier Development<br />

Look<strong>in</strong>g ahead<br />

Fykes said perhaps the most excit<strong>in</strong>g<br />

development has been the emergence over<br />

the last few years of a number of diverse<br />

suppliers capable of tak<strong>in</strong>g their relationship<br />

with Cumm<strong>in</strong>s to the next level.<br />

<strong>The</strong>se companies want to be viewed as<br />

strategic partners. <strong>The</strong>y do more than just<br />

provide Cumm<strong>in</strong>s with a part or service,<br />

they suggest ways the Company can<br />

improve its efficiency or product quality.<br />

based firm that works with Cumm<strong>in</strong>s<br />

on supply management and IT <strong>is</strong>sues.<br />

N.H., which specializes <strong>in</strong> turbomach<strong>in</strong>ery<br />

applications.<br />

JBE Inc., a Hartsville, S.C., company<br />

that provides complex and highly<br />

technical sub-assemblies and<br />

global supply cha<strong>in</strong> management.<br />

Spend<strong>in</strong>g on diverse suppliers<br />

<strong>in</strong> millions of dollars<br />

<strong>The</strong> total amount of money Cumm<strong>in</strong>s has been spend<strong>in</strong>g<br />

with diverse suppliers has steadily <strong>in</strong>creased s<strong>in</strong>ce 2006.<br />

group <strong>in</strong>clude corporations like Chrysler.<br />

Cumm<strong>in</strong>s was <strong>in</strong>vited to jo<strong>in</strong> <strong>th<strong>is</strong></strong> group<br />

and <strong>is</strong> the only member that doesn’t<br />

make vehicles.<br />
