Rojas, though, said the most important<br />

th<strong>in</strong>g her team did was talk to employees<br />

Leverag<strong>in</strong>g the full benefit of diversity<br />

EMPLOYEE RELATIONS<br />

Six Sigma <strong>is</strong> the data-based problem<br />

solv<strong>in</strong>g tool used across Cumm<strong>in</strong>s. Rojas<br />

recruited participants from various areas<br />

of the plant to be part of her team to<br />

ensure each area had a voice <strong>in</strong> the effort.<br />

She said Borunda’s will<strong>in</strong>gness to<br />

enhance the “Ergo Team” by add<strong>in</strong>g<br />

15 young eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>terns was critical.<br />

<strong>The</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>eers, who received some<br />

basic tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> ergonomics, brought<br />

fresh new ideas to the project as well<br />

as a lot of energy.<br />

“Six Sigma <strong>is</strong> our cultural tool to attack<br />

complex <strong>is</strong>sues,” Borunda said. “<strong>The</strong>n<br />

you need resources around to execute<br />

the method and make the difference.”<br />

An added benefit of Rojas’ <strong>in</strong>itiative <strong>is</strong><br />

that the eng<strong>in</strong>eers will now have a good<br />

understand<strong>in</strong>g of how the processes they<br />

design can impact an operator’s health,<br />

positively impact<strong>in</strong>g quality and efficiency<br />

as well as health and safety.<br />

Proper posture <strong>is</strong> key<br />

As part of its review of plant operations,<br />

the ergonomics team at San Lu<strong>is</strong> Potosí<br />

redesigned some jobs. In the “before” picture<br />

on the left, an employee stretches awkwardly<br />

to pick up someth<strong>in</strong>g out of a b<strong>in</strong>. <strong>The</strong> job<br />

was redesigned so the employee could pick up<br />

to learn what they were th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

“<strong>The</strong> person do<strong>in</strong>g a job, they know<br />

what <strong>is</strong> giv<strong>in</strong>g them trouble, what <strong>is</strong><br />

caus<strong>in</strong>g them d<strong>is</strong>comfort,” Rojas said.<br />

“Really l<strong>is</strong>ten<strong>in</strong>g helps you come up with<br />

the best solution and makes changes<br />

much easier to implement.”<br />

Plant leaders set priorities and implemented<br />

a program <strong>in</strong> 2011 that <strong>in</strong>cluded an<br />

improved procedure to <strong>report</strong> <strong>in</strong>cidents<br />

to the medical department, prevention of<br />

some <strong>in</strong>juries through exerc<strong>is</strong>e, and some<br />

eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g changes <strong>in</strong> the way certa<strong>in</strong> jobs<br />

were performed.<br />

In addition, a physical therapy cl<strong>in</strong>ic was<br />

establ<strong>is</strong>hed us<strong>in</strong>g simple th<strong>in</strong>gs like a tub<br />

full of rice or lentils and blocks of wood<br />

to enhance exerc<strong>is</strong>es to build strength.<br />

“I th<strong>in</strong>k our project went beyond just<br />

prevent<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>juries,” said Rojas, who<br />

believes it could be a model for other<br />

Cumm<strong>in</strong>s facilities. “Not only <strong>is</strong> the<br />

plant safer, I th<strong>in</strong>k we’ve helped<br />

improve the work environment, too.”<br />

A diverse and <strong>in</strong>clusive work environment helps all<br />

employees work more effectively and efficiently, both with<br />

their local teams and with colleagues around the world.<br />

Th<strong>is</strong> ability to work locally and globally allows Cumm<strong>in</strong>s to<br />

focus on leverag<strong>in</strong>g the full power of the Company for its<br />

customers no matter where they are located.<br />

One way Cumm<strong>in</strong>s works to create the<br />

right environment for success <strong>is</strong> through<br />

a program called Unleash<strong>in</strong>g the Collective<br />

Power of Groups and Individuals, also<br />

known as the Affirmative Development<br />

Project. Th<strong>is</strong> project br<strong>in</strong>gs employees<br />

at all levels together to learn and practice<br />

skills that facilitate better understand<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and engagement.<br />

Workshops are customized for each<br />

participat<strong>in</strong>g group, depend<strong>in</strong>g on its<br />

specific needs, and help managers work<br />

more effectively with aff<strong>in</strong>ity groups, which<br />

are organized at Cumm<strong>in</strong>s around a specific<br />

demographic trait, and Local Diversity<br />

Councils, which are designed to promote<br />

diversity <strong>in</strong> general. <strong>The</strong> project’s goal:<br />

help all employees reach their full potential.<br />

“Th<strong>is</strong> project helps employees who are<br />

aff<strong>in</strong>ity group or Local Diversity Council<br />

members, as well as leaders, better align<br />

and strengthen their organizations. It helps<br />

managers and superv<strong>is</strong>ors better connect<br />

with and lead diverse teams,” said L<strong>is</strong>a<br />

Gutierrez, Executive Director of Cumm<strong>in</strong>s’<br />

Global Diversity Department.<br />

HOW IT WORKS<br />

While much of the d<strong>is</strong>cussion dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the sessions <strong>is</strong> customized to meet<br />

the particular cultural needs of the<br />

audience, the framework rema<strong>in</strong>s<br />

the same around the world.<br />

A series of one-on-one conversations with<br />

employees at all levels of the organization<br />

beg<strong>in</strong>s the workshop plann<strong>in</strong>g process.<br />

<strong>The</strong>se conversations are <strong>in</strong>tended to<br />

help the facilitators better understand<br />

the <strong>in</strong>tricacies and concerns of the<br />

local cultures they will be work<strong>in</strong>g<br />

with throughout the project.<br />

<strong>The</strong> second part <strong>is</strong> a full day session with<br />

aff<strong>in</strong>ity group and Local Diversity Council<br />

members, their managers and the local<br />

leadership. Th<strong>is</strong> event offers a venue for<br />

employees to speak freely about <strong>is</strong>sues,<br />

work collaboratively to develop plans to<br />
