SUSPICIOUS PACKAGE
1. Evaluate all articles received. Take caution whenever receiving mail or packages of
suspicious origin or questionable content.
2. Do not attempt to touch, open or move any suspicious letter, article or package.
3. If you receive a suspicious item, immediately put it down and do not attempt to move it.
4. Do not panic. Biological agents are not easily aerosolized. The mere act of opening the
item would generally not provide the energy required to project the agent into your
breathing zone.
5. Ask a co-worker to phone the Campus President or member of the CMT immediately.
They will call 911. If you are alone, phone yourself, trying to limit the number of things
you come in contact with. If you have been contaminated, limiting the number of items
you touch can prevent the spread of contamination.
6. Wait for the police to arrive. Do not leave the area. Do not allow others who may have
been in the area where the article was received or opened to leave until the police arrive
and assess the situation.
7. Security will isolate the package and initiate all follow-up activities.
8. A controlled evacuation of the building in which the agent was found will probably occur.
