Donations During the year Schenker AB donated money to a number of nonprofit organisations. For exampel, we have made a donation to BRIS (Children’s Rights in Society) instead of sending Christmas cards. We are a major donor to Chalmers University of Technology and we also support the Gothenburg Sustainable Development Award. We are also members of the non-profit association Hydrogen Gas Sweden. 22
GRI Environmental core indicators 2010 Overall The environmental core indicators presented here provide an overview of the resources that DB Schenker Sweden uses to carry on its operations. We also present the extent of emissions into the air, which is also our most significant environmental aspect, as well as the risk of emissions affecting land and water. Emission details only cover emissions from road vehicles operated by our Swedish Land Division. Emissions from rail have not been included and nor have emissions from sea and air transport, which takes place through the Air & Ocean Division. It is difficult to show how DB Schenker’s operations affect our environment although it is accepted that greenhouse gases (in our case mainly carbon dioxide) contribute to global warming. Emissions of sulphur and nitrogen contribute to acidification and eutrophication. Nitrogen and volatile hydrocarbons and oxygen, together with sunlight, form groundlevel ozone, which is harmful to flora and fauna. Particulate matter from vehicle exhaust gases is harmful to our health. Freons contribute to enlarging the hole in the ozone layer. Each year we formulate and follow up quantifiable environmental objectives. The management team adopts the general, central objectives and each divisional management then formulates action plans to achieve those objectives. The local units subsequently set their own local environmental objectives based on the environmental enquiry conducted in conjunction with ISO 14001 certification. As a member of the DB Group, DB Schenker also has the common Group climate objective of reducing carbon dioxide emissions per tonne-kilometre by at least 20 per cent through to 2020. The base year for this is 2006. 23
