Rescue Curriculum<br />

3350 WATER RESCUE OPERATIONS<br />

This course introduces the student to the four water rescue specialties (ice, surf, dive and swift water), based<br />

on NFPA 1670 and 1006. The concepts of buoyancy, water dynamics, basic hazard recognition, identifying<br />

likely victim location and handling witnesses will be addressed. Other areas will include basic water survival<br />

and self rescue, low-to high-risk benefit rescue techniques and shore-based water rescue skills. As part of the<br />

course, the student must pass a basic swimming test that will include treading water and swimming 50 meters<br />

in a pool for successful completion.<br />

Rescue<br />

Required PPE: Swimsuit and Coast Guard-approved Type III personal flotation device. Whistle-white water<br />

type, no moving parts.<br />

Prerequisites: 3310<br />

Hours: 16<br />

Students: Min: 10 Max: 20<br />

Fee: $25, $192 non-municipal, $256 out-of-state, military<br />

3362 US&R BUILDING COLLAPSE<br />

This course is part of the Structural Collapse Technician Program. It is designed to provide the senior-level<br />

responder with the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to safely respond and function within a structural<br />

collapse and urban search and rescue environment. Topics include: scene safety, building materials, structural<br />

systems, collapse patterns, hazard identification, building monitoring, US&R response strategy, structural sizeup,<br />

shoring basics and shoring construction.<br />

Prerequisites: 3310<br />

Required PPE: Steel-toe boots, helmet, leather gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, coveralls or long<br />

pants and shirts with long sleeves. PPE is to be provided by the student.<br />

Hours: 30 (3 days)<br />

Students: Min: 15 Max: 30<br />

Fee: $200; $500 Non-fire service, $625 out-of-state and military<br />

Grant fee: $15,000<br />
