Inspection & Investigation Curriculum 8506 QUARTERLY FIRE MARSHAL TRAINING Inspection & Investigation : These six-hour training programs are conducted to assist Certified Fire Marshals in obtaining the required 40 Professional Development Hours (PDH) of training needed to apply for recertification biennially. Courses are delivered throughout the state through the SCFA Regional Offices. One class is conducted each quarter at various locations within the state, and two identical classes are conducted each quarter at the SCFA. Classes are developed based on training requests received from Certified Fire Marshals, updated information from statutes, codes and standards, and items deemed of special interest to the cadre of Certified Fire Marshals. Subject matter changes each quarter. Per CFM recertification policy, each year one mandatory quarterly class is required. Certified Fire Marshals are given the choice in attending only one quarterly class offered in August or November. Prerequisite: None Hours: six per class (PDH) Class Hours: 9 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Fees: $5 per regional class (no meal provided), $11 for SCFA class (includes lunch, dorms not included. All costs and fees incurred for registration and training will be the responsibility of the individual or the respective department or agency. Students: Minimum – 20, maximum - depends on location. Contact the Registrar for specific course limitations. Registration Cut-off: Registration for this course has a 30-day cut-off. Pre-registration is required for all courses and must be received prior to cut-off date. Walk-in registration is not allowed. Textbook Information: Unless otherwise specified in a specific course offering, no textbooks will be required. Depending on the subject matter, it is suggested that students bring the referenced code book or standard. Handout materials will be provided for students taking notes. An exam may be given at the end of each program. Application Procedure: Students must complete the SCFA Registration Form and submit it to the appropriate SCFA Registrar, at least 30 days prior to start of class. Course Completion Certificates: Students successfully completing the course will be provided certificates indicating the number of PDH awarded for credit toward biennial recertification. 56 www.scfa.state.sc.us
Inspection & Investigation Curriculum 8507 FIRE MARSHAL CERTIFICATION This advanced course is designed to teach the student the needed skills of fire inspection, utilizing the International Building, Fire Codes, State Statutes, Fire Marshal Rules & Regulations, NFPA 13, 25, 30, 30A, 72, 96, and IFSTA Fire Inspection and Code Enforcement Manual & Interactive Study Guide. This course incorporates the provisions of NFPA 1031, Standard for Professional Qualifications for Fire Inspector and Plan Examiner. PART I Classroom: Five days (40 hours) of classroom instruction. PART 2 Exam: The exam is a five-hour, open-book, 100-question exam which will be given within 30 days after the completion of the classroom instruction. In the event that the student fails to achieve a minimum score of 70 on the final examination, the student will be allowed to schedule one retest with the OSFM Training Coordinator at no additional fee. In the event the student still does not achieve a minimum score of 70 on the retest, the student must retake the entire course. The fee for retaking the course will be $200. PART 3 Practical: After successful completion of the exam, each student will spend a day with a Deputy State Fire Marshal to conduct on-site inspections where you will be evaluated doing the following: personal appearance and working in a professional manner; having the proper tools to conduct an inspection; knowledge of codes and applying them; conducting a systematic inspection; writing reports; communicating with the public, etc. This phase must be completed within 90 days of passing the exam. In the event that the student fails to achieve a minimum score of 70 on the practical, the student will be allowed to schedule one retest with the OSFM Training Coordinator at no additional fee. In the event the student still does not achieve a minimum score of 70 on the practical, the student must retake the entire course. The fee for retaking the course will be $200. Failure in completing all parts of the program within 120 days of the last day of classroom instruction, will result in the student getting a failing grade for the course and being required to retake the course. The fee for retaking the course will be $200. After successful completion of the practical, a certificate of course completion and license application will be mailed to the student. Inspection & Investigation Prerequisite: Introduction to Fire Inspection Principles and Practices (Course 2139). A pre-course assignment will be sent to each student upon class acceptance, which must be completed before first day of class. Hours: 40 plus Fees: $200 (Course registration does not include dorm room or meals). All costs and fees incurred for registration and training will be the responsibility of the individual, or their respective department or agency. Students: Minimum: 15 Maximum: 35 Cancellation: No refund will be given for any cancellation after the 30-day cut-off. Application Procedure: Students must complete the SCFA Registration Form and submit it to the resident registrar, at least 30 days prior to start of class. Registration Cutoff: Registration for this course has a 30-day cut-off. All registrations must be received 30 days prior to start of course.
