Enhancing Professional Socialization Through the Metaphor of Tradition<br />

challenge in a context where the principles of democracy are increasingly<br />

expected to prevail. Therefore, traditions designed to attend to the issue of<br />

legitimacy likely will be the most successful ones for calming public criticisms.<br />

While I have offered one possible interpretation of the varying traditions of<br />

public administration, for purposes of designing a curriculum, the use of the<br />

metaphor itself is the most important and compelling thing for pedagogy.<br />

Organizing the field’s concepts according to tradition helps students of public<br />

administration anchor their professional identities and enhance understanding<br />

of their own philosophical commitments and shared theoretical lineage. Thus,<br />

they will be better prepared to weather the storms of discontent in the ongoing<br />

crisis of democratic legitimacy.<br />
