Household Food Security: Role of Seasonality<br />

and Type of Employment<br />

The study examines the links between sector<br />

and status of employment (self and wage<br />

employment), underemployment (seasonal<br />

and year round) and household income and<br />

its impact on household level food security.<br />

Identification of indicators of food insecurity and<br />

‘faces’ of food insecurity at household level, the<br />

links between type of employment and food<br />

insecurity and the responses to food insecurity<br />

are the key queries and objectives in the study.<br />

The results reveal households’ vulnerability to<br />

food insecurity, occurrence of seasonality of food<br />

scarcity, lack of household level accessibility<br />

and nutrition awareness, relevance of and lack<br />

of wage employment especially for female<br />

earning members and its positive role towards<br />

household gains and children’s welfare. The study<br />

was completed in May <strong>2009</strong> and Rushidan Islam<br />

Rahman was its Project Director.<br />

Impact Evaluation of the Bangladesh Rural<br />

Development Board<br />

This study was carried out for the Rural<br />

Development and Cooperatives Division of the<br />

Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development<br />

and Cooperatives, Government of the People’s<br />

Republic of Bangladesh. The study provides<br />

an assessment of the contribution of the<br />

Bangladesh Rural Development Board in poverty<br />

alleviation and rural development and reviews<br />

its performance in terms of identified criteria.<br />

The study was completed in June <strong>2009</strong> and S.M.<br />

Zulfiqar Ali was the Project Director. The names<br />

of co-researchers are Quazi Shahabuddin, M.<br />

Asaduzzaman, Abdul Hye Mondal, Md. Harunur<br />

Rashid Bhuyan and Mansur Ahmed.<br />

Food Security and Mitigation in Bangladesh<br />

Agriculture: Searching for a Low Carbon Path of<br />

Development<br />

The project aims to find and analyze the carbon<br />

footprint in Bangladesh agriculture from the<br />

farmers’ field to the purchase by the consumers.<br />

Two crops, rice and potato, will be targeted.<br />

Both direct and indirect use of energy, fertilizer,<br />
