Annex 3: Academic Profile of <strong>BIDS</strong><br />
Professionals<br />
Mustafa K. Mujeri<br />
Director General<br />
Dr. Mustafa K. Mujeri obtained his M.A. in Economics<br />
from the University of Rajshahi in 1970; and earned<br />
M.A. and Ph.D. in Economics from McMaster<br />
University in 1974 and 1978 respectively. He has long<br />
teaching and research career at different universities<br />
and institutions at home and abroad. Before joining<br />
<strong>BIDS</strong> as the Director General in April <strong>2009</strong>, he served<br />
as the Chief Economist of the Bangladesh Bank<br />
(central bank). He has wide ranging experience in<br />
consultancy and research on development issues in<br />
different UN and other international, multi-lateral,<br />
bilateral, and private sector organizations. He has<br />
published extensively in national and international<br />
journals. He has also served in various policy<br />
making and other committees at both national and<br />
international levels. His current areas of research<br />
interest include: poverty and MDGs monitoring<br />
and analysis; macro policy analysis and strategic<br />
development issues; application of modeling<br />
and quantitative techniques in development<br />
policy; public policy analysis; sustainable rural and<br />
participatory development; social development;<br />
poverty reduction strategy formulation and policy/<br />
program development; monitoring and evaluation<br />
of programs/projects, and monetary policy analysis.<br />
Abu Ahmed Abdullah<br />
Research Director<br />
Mr. Abu Ahmed Abdullah obtained an M.A. in<br />
Economics from Dhaka University in 1965 and<br />
another M.A. from Harvard University in 1970.<br />
He joined the Pakistan Institute of Development<br />
Economics in 1966. He also served in several<br />
positions outside the country including that<br />
of a Visiting Scholar at the Christian Michelsen<br />
Institute, Bergen in 1977-78, a Visiting Associate<br />
Professor in the Department of Economics,<br />
University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1986-<br />
87. He has a number of publications in national<br />
and international journals. His research interests<br />
are the political economy of agrarian structure,<br />
agricultural price policy, rural development, and<br />
social development. He retired from <strong>BIDS</strong> as a<br />
Research Director in March <strong>2010</strong>.<br />
M. Asaduzzaman<br />
Research Director<br />
Educated in Dhaka University, London School<br />
of Economics and the University of Sussex, Dr.<br />
M. Asaduzzaman joined the Pakistan Institute<br />
of Development Economics in 1969 as a Staff<br />
Economist. Currently, he is a Research Director<br />
of <strong>BIDS</strong>. Dr. Asaduzzaman’s research interests<br />
encompass areas of agriculture, natural resource<br />
management and rural development. His recent<br />
areas of interest include investment opportunities<br />
in agriculture for ensuring food security and<br />
transition to a post-green revolution world, energy<br />
development in Bangladesh and challenges of<br />
climate change and problems of rural energy<br />
development. He is one of the Commissioners<br />
in the International Commission on Sustainable<br />
Agriculture and Climate Change under the CGIAR.<br />
Omar Haider Chowdhury<br />
Research Director<br />
Dr. Omar Haider Chowdhury obtained an M.A. in<br />
Economics from the University of Dhaka in 1968.<br />
He earned another M.A. from the University of<br />
Manchester in 1974 and Ph.D. in Economics from<br />
the University of London in 1980. He joined the<br />
Pakistan Institute of Development Economics<br />
(PIDE) as a Staff Economist in 1970 and worked as<br />
Research Director of <strong>BIDS</strong> till <strong>2010</strong>. He has published<br />
extensively in national and international journals<br />
in the areas of economic development in general<br />
and nutrition and food policy, macroeconomic<br />
management, social welfare, and implications of<br />
improvements in social and physical infrastructure<br />
on development especially of Bangladesh. He<br />
worked as consultant for different organizations<br />
including ADB, FAO, World Bank, UN-ESCAP, and<br />
APDC. He retired as Research Director in <strong>2010</strong>.<br />
Quazi Shahabuddin<br />
Research Director<br />
Dr. Quazi Shahabuddin obtained his M.A. in<br />
Economics from Dhaka University in 1967, M.Sc.<br />
