on India, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan. He has worked
with a distinguished group of academics, and
produced a number of publications in peerreviewed
academic journals and/ or contributed
chapters to several books in the area of poverty
analysis, human development, growth economics,
labor market and regional inequality issues. He is
interested in mix-methods and multidisciplinary
research in the broad area of development
and keen in working with diverse disciplinary
backgrounds and approaches.
Mahmudul Alam
Senior Research Fellow
Dr. Mahmudul Alam obtained B.A. (Honours in
Economics) from Dhaka University in 1968, M.Sc. in
Economics from Islamabad University in 1968, M. Sc.
in Economics from Islamabad University in 1969, a
Diploma in Development Economics from Cambridge
University in 1975, and a D. Phil in Development
Studies from IDS, Sussex University in 1982. His
current research interests are socioeconomics of
education, human resource development, training
and institution building. He has been working as a
Senior Research Fellow of BIDS.
M .A. Mannan
Senior Research Fellow
Dr. M .A. Mannan obtained an M.A. in Economics
from Dhaka University in 1974, an M.Sc. in
Demography from London School of Economics
and Political Science in 1976, and a Ph.D. in
Economics from Delhi School of Economics in 1987.
He has been working in BIDS since November 1974.
He has undertaken research and consultancy works
focusing primarily on gender dimension of poverty,
gender violence, impact evaluation of social safety
nets, maternal and child health, and primary health
care. He has extensive experience in conducting
research sponsored by national and international
organizations including UNFPA, UNICEF, UNDP,
World Bank, ICRW, CARE and various agencies of the
government. His current research interests include:
gender issues, reproductive health, rural poverty,
and health care financing. He has a number of
publications including three books. Currently, he is
working as a Senior Research Fellow of BIDS.
Muhammad Abdul Latif
Senior Research Fellow
Dr. Muhammad Abdul Latif obtained his M.A. in
Economics from Dhaka University in 1974 and
joined BIDS as a Staff Demographer in 1975. He
did his M.Sc. in Demography at the London School
of Economics in 1976 and received his Ph.D. in
Industrial Economics from the Jawaharlal Nehru
University, New Delhi in 1985. His major research
interests cover areas in industrial economics, rural
infrastructure, and microcredit. He worked as a
Senior Research Fellow of BIDS till 2010.
Sharifa Begum
Senior Research Fellow
Dr. Sharifa Begum has done M.A in Economics
from the University of Dhaka, M.Sc. in Medical
Demography from London School of Hygiene
and Tropical Medicine, and Ph.D. in Population
Studies from International Institute for Population
Sciences, Bombay. Her current areas of work
relate to population, health, reproductive health,
poverty, water, sanitation and women. Currently
,she is working as a Senior Research Fellow of BIDS.
Chowdhury Anwaruzzaman
Senior Research Fellow
Dr. Chowdhury Anwaruzzaman obtained an
M.A. in Economics from the University of Dhaka
in 1970 and joined the Pakistan Institute of
Development Economics as an Assistant Staff
Economist. He completed an M.A. in Economics
in 1975 and received a Ph.D. in Economics from
Cornell University in 1994. His areas of interest are
monetary, macro and international economics.
He worked as a Senior Research Fellow of BIDS till
2010.
Abdul Hye Mondal
Senior Research Fellow
Dr. Abdul Hye Mondal obtained his M.A. in
Economics from the University of Dhaka in 1966
and Ph.D. in Industrial Economics from the Central
School of Planning and Statistics, Warsaw in 1976.
He completed a full course on Human Resource
