with a distinguished group of academics, and<br />

produced a number of publications in peerreviewed<br />

academic journals and/ or contributed<br />

chapters to several books in the area of poverty<br />

analysis, human development, growth economics,<br />

labor market and regional inequality issues. He is<br />

interested in mix-methods and multidisciplinary<br />

research in the broad area of development<br />

and keen in working with diverse disciplinary<br />

backgrounds and approaches.<br />

Mahmudul Alam<br />

Senior Research Fellow<br />

Dr. Mahmudul Alam obtained B.A. (Honours in<br />

Economics) from Dhaka University in 1968, M.Sc. in<br />

Economics from Islamabad University in 1968, M. Sc.<br />

in Economics from Islamabad University in 1969, a<br />

Diploma in Development Economics from Cambridge<br />

University in 1975, and a D. Phil in Development<br />

Studies from IDS, Sussex University in 1982. His<br />

current research interests are socioeconomics of<br />

education, human resource development, training<br />

and institution building. He has been working as a<br />

Senior Research Fellow of <strong>BIDS</strong>.<br />

M .A. Mannan<br />

Senior Research Fellow<br />

Dr. M .A. Mannan obtained an M.A. in Economics<br />

from Dhaka University in 1974, an M.Sc. in<br />

Demography from London School of Economics<br />

and Political Science in 1976, and a Ph.D. in<br />

Economics from Delhi School of Economics in 1987.<br />

He has been working in <strong>BIDS</strong> since November 1974.<br />

He has undertaken research and consultancy works<br />

focusing primarily on gender dimension of poverty,<br />

gender violence, impact evaluation of social safety<br />

nets, maternal and child health, and primary health<br />

care. He has extensive experience in conducting<br />

research sponsored by national and international<br />

organizations including UNFPA, UNICEF, UNDP,<br />

World Bank, ICRW, CARE and various agencies of the<br />

government. His current research interests include:<br />

gender issues, reproductive health, rural poverty,<br />

and health care financing. He has a number of<br />

publications including three books. Currently, he is<br />

working as a Senior Research Fellow of <strong>BIDS</strong>.<br />

Muhammad Abdul Latif<br />

Senior Research Fellow<br />

Dr. Muhammad Abdul Latif obtained his M.A. in<br />

Economics from Dhaka University in 1974 and<br />

joined <strong>BIDS</strong> as a Staff Demographer in 1975. He<br />

did his M.Sc. in Demography at the London School<br />

of Economics in 1976 and received his Ph.D. in<br />

Industrial Economics from the Jawaharlal Nehru<br />

University, New Delhi in 1985. His major research<br />

interests cover areas in industrial economics, rural<br />

infrastructure, and microcredit. He worked as a<br />

Senior Research Fellow of <strong>BIDS</strong> till <strong>2010</strong>.<br />

Sharifa Begum<br />

Senior Research Fellow<br />

Dr. Sharifa Begum has done M.A in Economics<br />

from the University of Dhaka, M.Sc. in Medical<br />

Demography from London School of Hygiene<br />

and Tropical Medicine, and Ph.D. in Population<br />

Studies from International Institute for Population<br />

Sciences, Bombay. Her current areas of work<br />

relate to population, health, reproductive health,<br />

poverty, water, sanitation and women. Currently<br />

,she is working as a Senior Research Fellow of <strong>BIDS</strong>.<br />

Chowdhury Anwaruzzaman<br />

Senior Research Fellow<br />

Dr. Chowdhury Anwaruzzaman obtained an<br />

M.A. in Economics from the University of Dhaka<br />

in 1970 and joined the Pakistan Institute of<br />

Development Economics as an Assistant Staff<br />

Economist. He completed an M.A. in Economics<br />

in 1975 and received a Ph.D. in Economics from<br />

Cornell University in 1994. His areas of interest are<br />

monetary, macro and international economics.<br />

He worked as a Senior Research Fellow of <strong>BIDS</strong> till<br />

<strong>2010</strong>.<br />

Abdul Hye Mondal<br />

Senior Research Fellow<br />

Dr. Abdul Hye Mondal obtained his M.A. in<br />

Economics from the University of Dhaka in 1966<br />

and Ph.D. in Industrial Economics from the Central<br />

School of Planning and Statistics, Warsaw in 1976.<br />

He completed a full course on Human Resource<br />
