Graduate Diploma from Central School of Planning<br />

and Statistics in Warsaw. He obtained a second<br />

Master’s Degree from UFSIA, University of Antwerp<br />

and subsequently Ph.D. in Applied Economics from<br />

the same University. He has a number of published<br />

articles in international and national academic<br />

journals in the areas of international trade,<br />

industrial economics, and employment. He has<br />

co-authored several chapters in published books.<br />

He also worked as a short-term consultant for the<br />

World Bank, DFID, ADB, and EU. His current areas of<br />

research interest relate to industrial employment<br />

and international trade. He worked as a Senior<br />

Research Fellow of <strong>BIDS</strong> till <strong>2010</strong>.<br />

K.M. Nabiul Islam<br />

Senior Research Fellow<br />

Dr. K. M. Nabiul Islam obtained his Masters Degree<br />

from Dhaka University in 1970 and later received<br />

Post-graduate diploma in National Economic<br />

Planning from Warsaw and training in Rural<br />

Research and Rural Policy from IDS of Sussex<br />

University. He obtained a Ph.D. from the Flood<br />

Hazard Research Centre at Middlesex University,<br />

London. Dr. Islam joined <strong>BIDS</strong> in 1972, and has since<br />

been involved in a number of major studies relating<br />

to, among others, development of rural and small<br />

industries; development of large industries, with<br />

particular reference to technological capability;<br />

floods; famines; flood and water management; and<br />

impact evaluation of rural development and flood<br />

control, drainage and irrigation projects. Dr. Islam<br />

has published widely in journals, published two<br />

books on flood loss management, and co-authored<br />

and contributed to several books. Currently, he is<br />

working as a Senior Research Fellow at <strong>BIDS</strong>.<br />

Anwara Begum<br />

Senior Research Fellow<br />

Dr. Anwara Begum obtained her Ph.D. from the<br />

University of Liverpool in 1995. She has been an<br />

active researcher on rural, urban and international<br />

migration having a wide interest in development<br />

issues: female entrepreneurs, gender equality<br />

and empowerment of women, employment<br />

and income programs, rural and urban area<br />

development priorities, formal and informal<br />

industry worker conditions, informal service sector<br />

and poverty issues, housing and settlements and<br />

the problems of social and economic deprivation of<br />

urban and rural poor dwellers, formal and technical<br />

education, human resource development and<br />

rural-to-urban migration. Currently, she is working<br />

as a Senior Research Fellow of <strong>BIDS</strong>.<br />

Mohammad Yunus<br />

Senior Research Fellow<br />

Dr. Mohammad Yunus obtained his M.S.S. in<br />

Economics from the University of Chittagong in<br />

1990, M.Sc. and M. Phil. from the University of<br />

Strathclyde, Glasgow in 1997 and 1998 respectively,<br />

and Ph.D. from the Georgia State University, Atlanta<br />

in 2006. He joined the <strong>BIDS</strong> in 1992. His current<br />

research interests include taxation, state and local<br />

government fiscal policies, fiscal decentralization,<br />

food security and poverty alleviation, exchange<br />

rate issues, tobacco consumption and health<br />

hazards, and applied econometrics (time-series<br />

and panel data). He has published extensively in<br />

both national and international journals. He has<br />

also to his credit numerous other publications<br />

in the form of research reports, and contributed<br />

to various other edited volumes. Currently, he is<br />

working as a Senior Research Fellow of <strong>BIDS</strong>.<br />

Zulfiqar Ali<br />

Senior Research Fellow<br />

Dr. Zulfiqar Ali obtained Ph.D. in Economics<br />

from the University of Bath in 1998. Earlier, he<br />

obtained B.Sc. (Honours) and M.Sc. in Economics<br />

from Jahangirnagar University in 1989 and 1990<br />

respectively. Later, he completed a course on<br />

“Economic Theory and Poverty Reduction: Theory,<br />

Empirical Evidence and Implication for South Asia”<br />

organized by the World Bank Institute in 1998 and<br />

another course on “Human Development: From<br />

Theory to Practice” from the Queen Elizabeth<br />

House of the University of Oxford in 2000. His areas<br />

of interest include growth, inequality and poverty;<br />

human and social development; human wellbeing;<br />

applied economics; natural resources and<br />

environmental economics; and climate change.<br />

Currently, he is working as a Senior Research Fellow<br />

of <strong>BIDS</strong>.<br />
